It is definitely easier to maintain your enthusiasm for the mission if you can keep the big picture in mind at all times. You may sometimes be called upon to do something you don't want to do and don't think is the right thing to do. The US military is a powerful force in world affairs. It is used to protect the interests of the United States and its allies, and nothing else. It reports to the President of the United States, and nobody else. The President reports to the people of the United States, and nobody else. Many people and institutions would like to turn the US military into something it's not, like a global rescue service to respond to every crisis and tragedy in every corner of the world. Never forget, however, that throughout its existence the US military has been a force for good in the world. Your efforts, even if you may sometimes question them in the short term, are part of a larger strategic philosophy that has, century after century, conflict after conflict, made the world a better place.
If it's sometimes hard to see that your efforts are making much of a contribution, welcome to the military. A bloated bureaucracy under the best of circumstances, the military establishment doesn't do anything quickly. You must have patience if you want to have a happy career in the Air Force. It is very common to hear service¬people say that they don't begin to see the fruits of their labors until they near the end of a three-year assignment.
