The cool mist of the waterfall is reviving. It beads up on my face, giving me the opportunity to cool off and breathe fresh air. The dank cell was musty and smelled. This was a welcomed reprieve. “Where are we, Leo?” I shout over the falling water, hitting the rocks below us.

Leo smiles. “In my favorite place, The Falls of the unseelie court.”

“You’re from the seelie court, but yet the Unseelie Falls is your favorite place.”

“Come. We’re not safe here for much longer.” I watch him as he assesses the drop in front of us.

Nick scratches the back of his neck. “Where are we supposed to go from here? We’re behind a waterfall for crying out loud.”

“We go through it.”

Before Nick and I could process what was happening, Leo jumps through the back of the waterfall into the mist.

“Wait! We don’t know what’s down there, we don’t know what we’re jumping into!” Nick panics.

“Well, it’s go through the waterfall or backtrack into the castle. I don’t think we have much choice here. Come on.”

I took a deep breath and plunge through the waterfall. It was a longer drop than I imagine, and when I hit the water, I sank quickly to the bottom.

It’s a good thing that vampires don’t need air otherwise, I might have drowned. My face broke through the surface, and just out of human instinct, I gasp for air.

“Boss, are you okay?”

I see Nick swimming toward me. “Yeah, I’m good, Nick.”

“Where’s Leo?” We both scan the pool of clear blue water.

“I’m over here.” Leo shouts in return and we see Leo perched at the tree line near the water’s edge.

“Alright, let’s go.” Nick follows me as I make way through the small wakes to the water’s edge. Nick and I pull ourselves up next to Leo.

He chuckles. “That was great.”

“Speak for yourself. Vampires don’t swim. We like to stay dry.”

“Of course they do.”

“I think what Nick is trying to say is we prefer not to swim.”

As we sat there, catching our breath, we hear movement behind us. “Did you hear that?”

“Yeah, Nick, I heard that.”

Leo stands and moves toward the noise. “Don’t worry, we’re okay.”

I felt my fangs pushing through my gums, ready for a fight when three silhouettes make their way out of the forest.

Leo raises his hand. “Hello!” He startled the teen, who then turns and runs.

“We can’t let him get away, Nick.” The two of us, with lightning speed, caught up to him and held him against a tree.

Leo quickly came up behind us. “Let him go until we know who he is.” Leo reaches for the boy’s shoulder. “Tell us who you are, kid.”

The skinny boy looked at the three of us and sighed. “I belong to the dissidents. We don’t want to live under Jareia’s rule, so we’ve kept to ourselves in the forest.”

Leo claps his hands. “That’s fantastic. That means you’re on our side.”

The boy growls. “We’re on no one’s side. Let me go.”

“We mean you no harm.” I say to him.
