Jenny

I wake up to my stomach growling and my mouth dry. I'm really thirsty. When I sit, I feel a little dizzy and think that I might even be slightly dehydrated. I look out the window and see the sun has traveled past the midpoint.

I told Haftar I would try to be up by midday. I hope he understands that I didn't mean to sleep this late. After last night, or this morning depending on how you look at it, I think I should be okay. We bonded in a way that was much more intimate than anything else we'd done. I'm just glad I didn't sleep the entire day away.

I get dressed and head to the kitchen. I should drink some water and then get to work on making lunch for Haftar. I realize I never asked him what he likes to eat. If I'm going to be the one making his meals, that's probably something I should know. I figure that if it's in his kitchen, he's probably not allergic to it, but I'd like to aim slightly higher than not killing him.

When I enter, I jump back slightly, shocked to see that he's already there and making something on the stove. The aroma hits me all at once, and my stomach growls loud enough to make him look up from his task.

"Oh, good. You're awake. I was wondering how long you were going to sleep," he says, going back to pushing something around in a frying pan.

"I'm sorry. I should have gotten up earlier. I can finish cooking if you'd like," I offer even though I have no idea what he's making.

"It's alright. I do actually know how to cook."

"I'll say. It smells good."

"Then I guess you're in luck. I made enough for both of us. I was going to eat and then come wake you if you were still out. I figured if you had your first real day of all-day work and then I kept you up all night, it was probably best to give you a day to recover."

"Well, there's still some day left," I say. "I can get something done before dark."

"Yeah, some day left today. We'll just call yesterday a vacation."

"What do you mean? I worked yesterday."

"No. You slept."

I look at him for a moment. I understand the words he's saying individually, but collectively he's not making any sense.

"But I took care of the garden and the dusting, and then lunch," I pause. The memory of what we did on the kitchen table for dessert causes me to flush warm. "And cleaned up and made dinner."

"That was the day before yesterday."

It still takes me a second to realize what he's saying.

"I slept all day? Oh, no. I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't—"

"Jenny, it's alright. I'm not mad. You did a lot on your first day, and I was the one who insisted you play music for me and kept you up all night."

"Thank you, sir."

He picks up the frying pan and walks it over to the table, where I realize he'd already set out two plates.
