I PULLED CODY ALONG WITH me as I headed for the upper galley and a corner round table.

I didn’t look to see if Dek and Ti followed, I just assumed they did.

Once there, I sat Cody down hard on a wooden chair and folded my arms. “Speak.”

By that time, Ti and Dek had taken chairs. Ti straddled his and leaned his exceptionally masculine chin on the top of the chair back. Dek positioned himself close to Cody. I was too pumped up to sit.

“I don’t know what to tell ya.” Cody put a hand through his tousled, copper tinted locks. “One minute, I was on my way to meet Dek…the next, I was in werewolf form…trying to attack him, but the thing is, I was aware that something was pushing me—forcing me to attack against my will. I was hurting over it…man, Dek is my bud!”

“Who? Who compelled you? Think, Cody…” I urged, and now I did pull a chair up and sat so I could look directly into his amber glinting eyes.

“Ro, don’t ya think I would have told ya outright if I knew? All I can see is a shadowy figure…a male…and his deep booming voice in my head, and that is all I got.”

“Why did ye call Dek to meet with ye, lad?” Ti asked, then as he sat up, still straddling the chair, absurdly, I thought about straddling him. Bad girl, very bad girl.

“I wanted to tell Dek about the rumors…that everyone is on edge because they think some new paranormal is sucking the life-force out of humans. I always let Dek know when something is off in the community. The Dark Lord keeps most of us on the straight and narrow, and that is how his laws work. So, I had to tell Dek about what I had heard, and see if the Dark Lord wanted some eyes and ears out on the town. We are all worried about it, and I wanted to offer my help,” Cody said.

“Good man.” Dek nodded vigorously, and Cody grinned like a schoolboy.

I put a hand on Cody’s shoulder, and turned to Ti. “If you agree, Ti, I think we could enlist the help of many New Orleans supernaturals to watch the riverfront…right?”

Cody interrupted me with a fist up in the air, “I knew it. It is some river thing. I knew it. When I was on my way to Dek, I was near the river’s edge, and something came out of the deep…I was sure of it, but it seemed that no sooner did I see it, and…bam, I had transformed into werewolf, and have no idea why.”

None of us said anything to this, and I happened to glance over at the long bar below. Mom and Aunt Sharon were tending bar and giving the patrons a good time with their antics. There was no sign of my dad or Uncle Shags. No doubt they were in the Secret Chamber going through files and manuscripts.

Mom looked my way and gave me one of her ‘knowing’ looks.
