CHAPTER SEVEN

“Mom!” I gasped.

“Yes, we are dating,” Daniel said calmly.

George chuckled as he hauled me past my mother. “You mean that hot smooch in the middle of the dining area wasn’t a big enough give-away for you, Carol?”

“George!” I hissed. Then I tried to speak to Daniel. “Daniel, I’m sorry about the craziness. I—”

“Excuse us,” George said, dragging me back into the kitchen.

“Hold up a second,” I pleaded.

“How long have you and my daughter been dating, Daniel?” My mother’s voice had me blushing.

“Oh my god. Mother!” I said, absolutely mortified.

“We’ve been seeing each other for a few weeks now,” Daniel said easily.

“And what do you do for a living, dear?” she asked next.

“George,” I tried again as the kitchen door swung closed behind us. “Please. This is so embarrassing. Let me get out there before my mother gets Daniel’s social security number and blood type.”

“Sorry. There’s no time, Candice.” He blithely ignored my plea. “Now, go zhuzh yourself up. Put on a clean apron too. I’d go for one of the aprons with your bakery logo, not the cheeky ones.”

“Why?” I asked suspiciously.

“Because, we are about to break the Williams Ford website and blow up your social media account for the bakery.”

I plopped my hands on my hips. “What exactly are you up to?”

“Candice,” he said, pulling my cosmetics bag from the drawer. “Are we friends?”

“Of course we are.”

“Then trust me.” He untied my apron himself. “Clean apron. Ruffle those curls. Freshen the war paint. Go!”

Ten minutes later, I stood, my back to the paint splattered bricks, holding a fancy platter full of our product. Under George’s direction I flashed a big smile and followed his and Sharon Waterman’s suggestions for the best poses.

Several pedestrians stopped and watched. I tried not to be embarrassed as Sharon and George both snapped away with their cell phones. A fashion model I was not. Fortunately, it didn’t take too long. George announced he had gotten the picture he was looking for, and Sharon gleefully agreed.

“You two are downright scary, you know that?” I said and ended up handing out the treats to a family and a couple who were out walking on Main Street.

Daniel had watched the whole thing. Standing in the open door, he grinned at me when we all came back inside. “Here you go, gorgeous,” he said, handing me my baker’s cap.

Flustered and a tad embarrassed at all the attention, I slapped the cap back over my hair. “They ganged up on me,” I said by way of explanation.

“I think it’s a damn clever idea,” Daniel said.

“Did you want some cookies to go with your coffee?” I asked, thinking of his regular order.

“It can wait,” he said kindly.

Since no one was at the counter waiting to order, I joined George and Sharon. They sat at a table going over the pictures in his phone. My mother stood between the two of them and supervised.

“Check this out.” George held up the screen and showed me the best of the photos.

“Oh, it does look nice I suppose,” I said.
