CHAPTER 20
Alonzo
FINALLY I HAD A DAY OFF. BUT MY FIRST DAY OFF FOR THE WEEK HAD to be spent at the bakery for a cake tasting. My fiancée wouldâve gone nuts if I changed my mind at the last minute and decided not to come. So here we were at this bakery in Norfolk, tasting different flavors and fillings to go inside of our wedding cake. The owner of the shop was Kim Newsome. She was a popular young white woman, with pink, blue, and blond hair, and tons of baking experience, Iâm told. She came highly recommended, as far as the tastes of her desserts. But her prices were out of this world. Pricilla, her sister, Yona, their mother, and I sat at a round table with the owner of the bakery, who was sitting across from us. She brought out a variety of mini cake bites with different-flavored jams and fillings we could add to our wedding cake. I was instantly sold on the yellow cake filled with the strawberry jam.
âThis is the one I want,â I told Pricilla and Kim.
Kim smiled.
âBut you havenât tasted the other cake bites,â Pricilla pointed out.
âI donât need to taste the other ones. I want this.â I pointed to the rest of the cake bite left on my plate.
âBaby, just try the chocolate cake with the chocolate ganache.â
âYes, please do. And while youâre doing that, we have the vanilla cake with passion fruit. This is our coconut Key lime cake with cream cheese icing. Then we have Victorian wedding cake, which is a buttercream frosting and raspberry jam within the layers. Hereâs our carrot cake with buttercream frosting. And, lastly, we have this Prosecco-infused cake filled with a fresh, ripe peach buttercream,â Kim explained.
There were a lot of cakes to choose from, because after we tasted everything, they were all good. I figured Iâd play the backseat role and let Pricilla choose which one she wanted. With her mouth filled with the Victorian cake, she pointed toward her mouth and gave us a head nod.
âWell, then, that settles it. She likes the Victorian cake,â I announced.
âSeems that way to me too,â Pricillaâs mom agreed.
When Pricilla was about to comment, five people came walking through the front door of the bakery and we all turned our attention toward them. As soon as I zoomed in on the group of people, I realized that they were federal agents and Norfolk city police officers. The woman in the group approached me and said, âAlonzo Riddick, you are under arrest for the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Nichols, so please stand up.â
âWait, there must be some mistake. I ainât killed nobody!â
âYeah, he didnât kill nobody, lady!â Pricilla jumped to my defense.
âWell, the evidence we have against you says you did. Now stand up!â
Dumbfounded, I stood up from my chair and turned around so I could be handcuffed. Pricilla, her mother, and her sister all started asking the agents and the cops questions about who I supposedly murdered, and how they couldnât just barge up in here and arrest me like this.
