Arlen would have rather stayed in his bedroom, kissing Mallory, but he was glad they weren’t going to avoid talking about the fire. Yes, it hurt to have lost everything, but Arlen was already thinking about future plans. He wouldn’t let the clan beat him down. He hadn’t done that when he still lived with them, and he wouldn’t start now.

He and Mallory walked downstairs holding hands. That was new for Arlen, and he kept peeking at Mallory, expecting him to take his hand away when they reached the others. They could hear the sound of the TV in the living room, and Mallory pulled Arlen that way.

Arlen hadn’t seen much of the house when they’d arrived early this morning. He’d been given a quick tour so he could find what he needed. Then he’d grabbed a shower and had fallen into bed. He felt better now that he’d slept, and instead of sadness, anger and indignance were fueling him.

They walked into the living room, still holding hands. Arlen expected someone to say something, but they barely gave them a second glance. Merrick was already there, and while he gave a little snort at the sight, he also handed Arlen a steaming cup of coffee.

“I made enough for both of us,” he said.

“Nothing for me?” Mallory asked, clearly teasing.

“I didn’t know if you’d want to add blood to it or whatever.”

Mallory wrinkled his nose. “God, no. Blood and coffee? That’s disgusting.”

Arlen wouldn’t know, but he handed Mallory the cup after taking a sip of his coffee. Mallory looked surprised, but he took it and drank. It was doctored the way Arlen liked it, with a lot of sugar and cream. Mallory seemed to like it, or at the very least, he didn’t have anything to say about it.

The TV caught Arlen’s attention. A picture on the screen showed him at some party a while ago. Then the picture vanished, and the burned-up club appeared.

It broke Arlen’s heart to see it that way. Even when he’d first found the building, it hadn’t been this bad. Now, just a few walls were still standing. The club was nothing more than a pile of burned trash and soot.

“How are you?” a man who’d been introduced to Arlen as Oren asked.

“Physically, Merrick and I are both fine,” Arlen told him. “But we’re angry.”

Oren nodded. He looked relaxed in jeans and a t-shirt, but Arlen knew he was the team leader. Just like everyone else in the room, he was deadly when he wanted to be. “Understandable, and we’ll help you in your fight with the clan.”

“And how are you going to do that?” Merrick asked rather rudely.

Arlen was used the way Merrick talked, but these people weren’t, and he didn’t want to look like he and Merrick didn’t appreciate what they were doing for them.

He cleared his throat. “I was wondering the same thing,” he said more gently. “Not that I don’t appreciate your help, but Merrick and I know the clan.
