Chapter 9

Daniel

It’s good to be home after a long day of work.

Sadly, I can’t say I always feel that way. I love Charlie but sometimes his incessant demands are a bit much to take after dealing with software and employees all day. This evening, though, is perfect. Thanks to Catharine’s help in taking good care of him, he doesn’t seem to be too rowdy or amped up or upset.

As we eat the cookies, Charlie says, “I loved making snow angels and cookies with Catharine. Can she come over all the time?”

“Yes,” I tell him, trying not to laugh at the fact that he clearly doesn’t understand the new arrangement, even though I’d gone over it with him before Catharine arrived. “She’s your new nanny. You remember Miss Natalie, who was here for a while but left?”

“The mean one?” Charlie says, scrunching up his nose.

“Was she mean?” I ask him.

All I knew was that Natalie said he was too much of a handful and that she couldn’t take him anymore.

“She told me I had to eat sushi or I was a baby. I don’t like squishy foods.”

“Oh, my God!” Catharine exclaims. “Is that true that she really did that?”

I shrug, feeling dumb. It’s the first time I’ve heard about it and Charlie sometimes makes up stories. But I also wouldn’t put it past Natalie, who had an odd insistence on doing everything her way, even though her way was clearly wrong. No six-year-old should be forced to eat sushi, of all things.

“I hope not,” I mouth, cringing. “But maybe.”

“I’m glad we have Catharine now and not Natalie!” Charlie continues.

“I’m glad we have Catharine now, too, son,” I say, winking at her.

She blushes and I’m dying to take her again. But I know I haven’t seen Charlie all day and it’s almost his bedtime, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I’m sure Catharine has had a long day, too, and maybe she’s eager to get home.

“Daddy?” Charlie asks, as he finishes munching the last bite of his cookie.

“Yes, buddy?”

I’m expecting him to ask me if he can have another cookie. But instead he asks, “Will Miss Catharine be here with us on Christmas?”

“Oh, buddy,” I say, smiling in Catharine’s direction. Both of us have a look of “what the fuck do we say to that?” on our faces. “I’m not sure. We’ll see. But maybe.”

I wink at her, thinking that it would be a great Christmas if I could get her under the mistletoe with me.

“Okay, maybe,” Charlie agrees.

“Now it’s time to put on your pajamas,” I tell him. “And go to bed.”

“Will you read me a story?” he asks me.

“Yes.”

I’m about to suggest that Catharine read him the story, too, because I don’t want her to leave yet. But I realize that would really be rushing things and could be confusing to Charlie.

“Do you want me to stick around, or…?” Catharine asks, as she looks around for her things.

“Yes,” I tell her. “I do want you to do that.
