Chapter 10 - Fletcher

Another morning sober. Fletcher was starting to get used to this clear-headed feeling again. He slept better, too, when he actually went to sleep with purpose instead of drinking until he had no choice but to pass out somewhere. And yes, he was still sleeping in the trashed apartments with his so-called pack… but as far as he was concerned, he was a free agent now. He was his own man. A lone wolf. Of course, he wasn’t going to say as much to the guys, at least until he’d sorted out a new place to live…

It was midmorning when he reached the community center. It was an easy building to find. The old part of the city, Volantis, had been planned centuries ago by a fastidious council of dragons who had ensured that every building fit into a perfect spiral, with the tallest building at the city’s center and the shortest on the very outside. The community center, though, was the only building in Volantis that broke that pattern, with an extra story added to its height that made it an anomaly in the otherwise perfect spiral. There was something very satisfying about that, to Fletcher. It felt like the right place to be.

He was vaguely aware, too, that this was where Roxanne’s office was… and maybe that was part of the appeal of the place, sure. But mostly, he was here to make himself useful. To make a change. To become someone marginally less shitty than he was. And if Roxanne saw that happening and decided she might want to revisit the subject of the afternoon they’d spent together, well… Get it together, Fletcher. This can’t just be about her.

It was Saturday morning, and the community center was bustling. The lower floor was mostly taken up with a huge library, complete with plenty of spaces for the community to study, read, socialize and pursue their hobbies. There were facilities for people to use, too—a huge kitchen, rooms with computers and other resources, and plenty of staff hanging around ready to offer assistance to lost-looking wolves…

“Are you looking for something in particular?”

The kid couldn’t have been older than fourteen, with a bright red ‘Volunteer’ badge pinned to his shirt and an even brighter smile on his face. Silver eyes, dark hair—Fletcher felt a strange twinge of memory, did his best to push it down. “Yeah, I, um. I want to—work here?”

“Oh!” The kid’s eyes widened a little. “Okay. You should probably talk to Leon, then? I generally just tell people where stuff is, I can’t—like, hire you.”

“That’s cool. That’s a cool job.” Alright, it seemed he was bad with kids when he wasn’t actively threatening them. Good to know. “Leon’s the boss, right?”

“Giselle’s the boss,” the kid corrected him. “But Leon’s always here. His office is up there, with the big ‘Closed’ sign on the door. It’s a joke,” he reassured him with a conspiratorial grin. “He pretends to be mean, but he’s not.”

“Me too,” Fletcher said faintly.
