Harlow

“I don’t see why you had to stay with her, is all I’m saying.” Travis was wearing a linen shirt with three buttons undone and lounging in his chair. El Real was a brunch spot to be seen at, as far as there was such a thing in Edmonton, Alberta.

“I know,” Harlow said. “I know that’s all you’re saying, because you’ve said it about eight times.” Her hair was in a messy bun, and she was wearing a summer dress with a men’s shirt over it. It was already getting warm, a little earlier than usual. Travis was scanning the restaurant for familiar faces, eager to tell the friends he thought of as society contacts about his weekend in Alaska. Or a version of it, anyway. Harlow stirred her coffee.

“My mother will always be important to me, Travis,” she said. “We discussed that a long time ago. And I still live there, until we’re bonded, at least.”

“Sure,” Travis said, still not really looking at her. “I mean, she’ll be welcome at our place whenever. It’ll be better for entertaining than hers…”

Harlow knew he meant bigger, shinier, newer, cleaner. She tapped her fork on the table, tines down. She was imagining Travis’ smug face beneath them, if she was honest. This had gotten so, so much harder since she’d been in Alaska. Since Chance. She couldn’t wish him away, couldn’t wish she had never reconnected with him. But she wished she could wish it.

“It’s my place, too, my mother’s. I travel a lot for work, I know, but that’s my home.”

“Sorry, Travis apologized, “our new place will be better for entertaining than yours and your mother’s place. Is that more to your taste?” Harlow glared daggers at him. “And you could have dressed up a little,” he continued. “You know everyone is going to be curious about my meeting your family in Juneau. I sort of expected you to look your best.”

“I thought you said I was the most beautiful woman in the province,” Harlow said, sounding a little mocking.

“Sure, you are,” Travis said, “but in my circles, one is still expected to put in a little effort.” Harlow ground her fork into the tablecloth. Luckily, she was saved from committing actual bodily harm by the server, who arrived with two plates.

“Egg white omelet with spinach?” he asked, as if he didn’t serve Travis the exact same thing regularly.

“Excellent,” Travis said, and the plate was placed in front of him.

“And the huevos rancheros with extra queso fresco for you,” the server said, putting Harlow’s food down in front of her.

“Thanks,” she said and moved her fork to her food. Travis swallowed his first bite of brunch and then gestured in the air with his fork.

“Anyway,” he told her, “your mother’s place is where you stay, but it doesn’t reflect you, does it? Your aesthetic. Your interests. You’ll be at ours fulltime, so you’ll really be putting our stamp on it. With the help of Mother’s interiors team, of course.”

Harlow chewed and swallowed quickly so she could talk.
