Gabby's head had never pounded so hard, not even after she and Maggie beat the Jaeger-shot record set by the frat boys they partied with.

It hurt too much to open her eyes. It hurt to think. Screw that…it hurt to exist.

Gabby wished she could slip back into the stale nothingness of sleep, but the ache that had taken root in her body wouldn't allow it. Breathing hurt. Her mouth was sticky and gross, and her throat burned as though she'd spent weeks in the desert. Even her whimpering sounded like a sick cat.

"You're okay, Gabriella," a deep, soothing voice said, smoothing out her agitation as though she'd been dipped in warm maple syrup. "I've got you."

How did the speaker know her name? Did it even matter? As long as he kept talking, Gabby was pretty sure the floaty feeling would continue.

Even so, she was plagued by the thought that something was wrong, but for the life of her, Gabby couldn't remember what it was. There was no way anything could be all that bad, especially when the source of that deep and soothing voice was here to protect her.

Strong, warm hands slid under her head and lifted it, and a cool glass was pressed against her lips. Gabby drank greedily. The cold water felt like heaven going down her parched throat.

"Thank you," she managed to croak when it was all gone.

"Don't talk. You were drugged—you've been out for a while, but you need more time to recover."

Drugged.

Gabby searched her memory but came up with only disjointed images. Running—she'd been running through the woods, and she tripped—no. She fell. She was so afraid. Something jabbed into her back…and then her legs stopped working.

Screaming! She'd screamed so hard—or at least she'd tried, but the sound wouldn't come out.

Gabby writhed, clawing at the blanket on top of her and struggling to open her eyes. But the blinding light through the slits felt like knives through her eye sockets, and she gave up and lay panting for breath, still unable to speak.

Strong arms gathered her against a big, rock-solid chest. It felt like the warmest, safest place she'd ever been, a soft cocoon that smelled nice, like the forest itself.

"It's okay. You're safe now."

Gabby hoped he'd keep saying that. She knew she wouldn't get tired of it. She wanted to thank this kind stranger, but when she finally got her lips to move and her tongue unstuck from the roof of her mouth, what came out was, "Where am I?"

"My house," he said gravely as if it were a very serious matter. "My bed."

A wave of warmth spilled over her body like sunshine. She knew who this was. If she could just think she'd remember his name—but somehow, she wasn't surprised to be here in this unusual bed. It was twice as big as it should have been. Or maybe she had shrunk? Like in that movie…

"The movie," she mumbled, frowning in concentration. "With the…"

"Shhhh." Even hushing her, the voice was nice. No, wait—something stirred down there, heating Gabby up from the inside out.
