“I wouldn’t go that far,” she said. “But I will say that intimacy–” Rain paused, because Oak had started to unlace her dress to extract her arm and heal the wound there. Rain gulped and shifted her arm out of the sleeve. “I mean, Topaz–that experience–made me wonder about the value of intimacy. It made me wonder what I was missing. But though I love Topaz–ouch!”

“Sorry,” Oak mumbled. “I should have warned you the poultice would sting a bit.”

“I only meant to say that though I love Topaz as a friend, I do not think he is the great love of my life–assuming I am lucky enough to have one, and who knows if I will be that lucky.”

Oak nodded.

“It seems that you were lucky in love,” Rain offered. “I sensed it, when I healed you. If I’m honest, I’d say that the power transfer drained you, certainly, but that it was merely the final, dramatic hit in a process that had been happening for years. You were killing yourself with grief.”

“I am ashamed of it,” Oak said. “But I couldn’t see any way out.”

Oak was wrapping her arm in gauze when Rain put her hand on his.

“Do you know what I like most about you?” she asked. “The intensity of your feelings. They are a double-edged sword, sure. I know all about that. But it’s rare to find that degree of feeling in someone who isn’t already a healer.”

“So you’re saying that you like me because I can’t control my feelings?”

Rain laughed.

“I’m just saying that your intensity is admirable, even if it isn’t easy. Your intensity helped you in battle, but hurt you in love. I’ve healed enough people to know that the wound can quickly become the gift, and vice versa.”

Rain pulled a blanket over her, suddenly feeling self-conscious about her bared shoulder and her dress which had been pulled down around her breasts, nearly visible from the contortions. Oak sat down next to her on the bed.

“You say that I have intense feelings,” he said. “What am I feeling now?”

Oak put his hand on her knee under the blanket and looked into her eyes.

Rain cleared her throat. She had to be honest.

“You are feeling…lust,” she said.

“It’s more than that.”

“I can’t tell.”

“You don’t know everything about a person’s feelings, do you?”

Rain shook her head, and they were silent for a moment. She looked down at her lap. Oak’s hand was still on her knee, and she found herself fantasizing about him bringing it slowly upward.

Why deny herself this pleasure, if he was willing? Hadn’t she been through enough? Weren’t her powers so increased because she had saved Oak’s life? That had to be a good omen. Maybe she could allow herself to let go, just this once. It wouldn’t have to mean anything. He was likely still in love with his wife and would miss her again when it was over. But those thoughts could perhaps be put to the side, just for tonight.

Rain looked from her lap into Oak’s eyes.
