Chapter 9 – Angus

I stomped up the hill through the fallen branches and leaves to where Mitzel was camped. The tents were spread all through the surrounding woods, within sight of Cassie’s house, but the guys were all congregated around Mitzel now.

“What’s the good word?” I asked.

“Nothing to report,” Nero said. “Been out berry-scavenging. There are lots of good ones. The huckleberries are massive.”

It was Jandro who tapped Nero upside the head this time. I had to smile.

“So far, so good,” Jandro concluded. “How long should we stick around for?”

“Until I’m confident that she’s safe out here,” I growled. I cleared my throat, giving them a look of apology. I didn’t mean to growl at them. I just didn’t trust that we were in the clear yet.

“Anything we should know?” Mitzel asked.

I shook my head. “Nah. She’ll want to go into town soon, I know that much. I’m trying to convince her to stay put. But she wants to sort out her phone and get some groceries and stuff. I’ve got her set up with my cellphone now so she can make some calls. But she says she has her truck at her friend’s house that she wants to get back, too.”

“Is that going to be an escorted service on our part?” Hayjack asked.

“I don’t think it’s going to be a service at all. I don’t think it’s safe yet. We need to keep being vigilant.” The growl was returning to my voice.

I turned and left them. I couldn’t keep growling at my men who were nothing but loyal to the call to justice and were obedient enough to follow my directions and orders. But they weren’t going to stay that way if I continued to act like a grade-A asshole toward them.

My aggression wasn’t aimed at them, anyway. It was at the situation. I didn’t like it that Cassie was so willing to live all the way out here by herself. She said she wasn’t that far away from people, but she was a good mile away from the central hub of Maple Falls, and that wasn’t including her driveway, which was another quarter or half a mile.

There was something admirable about her, though. I hadn’t come across many women who were willing to live in such seclusion, yet be so a part of a community. From everything I’d gathered about her from her friends and from her father, she had always had her finger to the pulse for any social justice causes. I had to tip my hat to that. I knew a little bit about that myself, being in the line of work I was in.

On top of it, it sounded as though she was a part of the local community in Maple Falls. The town itself didn’t seem like much when we’d passed through it. There was a small store that offered video rentals, a bar, and a hotel. There were a few arrows that advertised vacation housing, but there was little more to it.
