When my eyes opened next I was curled into the fresh sheets of the poolhouse bed. I sat up and blinked as my mouth tightened, fighting a smile.

Ever wake up to a large lion laying at the end of your bed? No? Just me? Okay then.

“Dean?” I whispered. The lion rumbled, keeping his eyes on the door as his tail flicked my leg lightly. I grinned as I crawled across the bed and wrapped my arms around the massive cat.

God! A human would lose it if they saw this. Dean was fucking huge as a human but as a lion? That shit was insane.

“Can you shift back?” I asked as I watched the sparkling afternoon light crawl across his golden fur. He let out a small sound of discontent and continued to stare at the door. I grinned because he totally was being territorial. That’s what this was about.

“You know,” I rolled onto my back next to him. “It may be easier to protect me if you can hold me.”

The lion looked at me with a huff but jumped off the bed. I felt a bit of excitement leap through my system as I watched him shift and land very human and very naked. He offered me a dry look as I clapped. What?! It was fucking cool. Dude could shift mid-air.

There was a reason I called the Reids my kitty cats. It wasn’t meant to be taunting despite how it sounded. When I’d first met the boys, at least when I first remembered them with clarity, that was what I’d called them.

My hands gripped the bars above me as my little feet dangled. I could feel myself slipping. I almost started crying but I couldn’t. I was a big girl. I was six. Plus, Cash said first graders don’t cry. So, I wouldn’t cry.

“What’s the matter with you?” a boy in line behind me complained. “Just cross already.”

A small snarl built in my throat, but I tried to reach the next one instead. My grip slipped and I winced knowing it was going to hurt. Then someone caught me. I looked up and smiled.

Deanie.

“Are you alright?” he asked quietly setting me down and helping me adjust my overalls, the strap fallen. I nodded and he looked up at the boy starting on the monkey bars. I watched as Dean walked up to him, tugging on his foot as the kid cried out and fell. My lips tweaked in a satisfied smile as my kitty cat walked back over.

Mommy said I shouldn’t “encourage” Dean’s bad behavior. Whatever that means.

“What the hell was that for?” the kid yelled.

“You rushed her and she fell,” Dean snapped tucking me against him. “I saw the entire thing.”

The kid stomped up to us and I let out a low warning sound. His head dropped and frowned at my reaction. Dean just kept holding me. I didn’t want this kid hurting Dean. He was my kitty cat.

“Michael,” Rhett yawned walking up to the two of us. “Get the heck out of here.
