Adoption of Krupps armour in place of Harvey.

Thin extension to bows.

Provision of flat armoured section amidships over citadel, in addition to sloping deck behind belt within this.

The 2in bow belt fitted to the class was quickly seen by many to have been provided mainly as a sop to current public agitation against ‘soft enders’, which were inadequate against medium-calibre projectiles except at very long range. In fact, it had been fitted against the possibility of a completely unarmoured forecastle being riddled by light, quick-firing shells or splinters, and then flooded by the bow wave, although this was only part of White’s theory of bow protection as envisaged for the Royal Sovereigns wherein he had planned at least medium thickness of armour plating.

At the time of construction, the class’s protection came under severe criticism, and it was remarked in The Times that they were little more than ‘second class battleships’.
