Mali closed her eyes. With Reid’s warm weight above her, nothing bad could ever happen again. She stroked her fingers through his hair, allowing herself the simple pleasure of seeing it spring back into place every time she let go.

“That was intense,” he murmured against her neck. His entire body had gone limp.

Mali smiled. “You’re an absolute beast, and I love you for it.” The pleasure Reid had brought to her body had made her mind erase the mansion and the horrible people that surrounded them, but it was impossible to keep reality at bay forever. To think that she might’ve been forced to do that with someone else, someone she didn’t love, someone who would use her…

“What is it?” Reid lifted his head, his brow wrinkling as he reached up and wiped a tear from the corner of her eye. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?”

She couldn’t help but smile at him. For a burly guy who didn’t like to follow the rules, he was one hell of a gentleman. “No. Not at all. I just fell back to Earth, and it occurred to me that we’re going to have to get out of here somehow.”

“Don’t you worry about that.” Reid pushed himself off the mattress, dropping a kiss on her breast before he sat up all the way and began looking for his pants. The wound on his face had stopped bleeding, but it stood out against his jaw as he dug out his cell and started firing off messages as fast as his fingers would move.

Mali got out of bed, too, throwing on the dreaded pink dress. She couldn’t stop the smile that played at her lips as she zipped it back up. “I put this on tonight because I was told to. I already made some trouble for Dean, and once they got me back into my room, he made it quite clear that he’d slaughter me if I didn’t do what I was told. He wanted to keep me here because he knew he could make a lot of money off of me, but I wasn’t worth it if they couldn’t count on me to behave myself.”

He tipped his head as he studied her, his humor reflected on her face. “And what’s so funny about that?”

“I knew I couldn’t behave for long, but I wanted to keep my own skin for as long as I could. I thought I’d be sold to some stranger tonight, and I was prepared to take him hostage and use him to get out of here. If I’d have known you would be the one to buy me, I might’ve been a little more excited about it.”

Reid set his phone on the bed as he tugged his clothes back on. “I haven’t known you all that long, not compared to how long I want to know you, but you always see the humor in things, even when the world is going to shit.”

She shrugged casually, knowing she hadn’t handled her captivity as bravely as she would’ve liked to imagine.
