THE SHOJIS WERE AS kind as they were intelligent and Ayperi was filled with delight as she and Adler were shown their new room.

“Mistress Shoji, could I speak with you about marriage things? Alone?” Ayperi asked quietly.

“Certainly. Join me in the still room.”

“I vill be right back, Adler,” she told him. He grinned and stretched out on the large bed.

The still room smelled of herbs and fresh soil. They sat on a small bench.

“Adler and I vould like to have no baby until Adler is done vis his studies. I do not know where to find a potion for zis.”

“I understand entirely, it will give you two time to get to know each other. And Adler was very surprised his father wanted him to marry before school was over, so no plans were made ahead of time for housing or anything. I do hope that room will work. His father is an impulsive man. A good man but quick to make decisions, and sometimes he makes them without thinking of consequences.” She patted Ayperi’s arm. “Adler will be Karl one day, what if he’d found a horrible wife? It could affect the whole Shire. He did well in finding you, I can already tell. I will teach you to brew the potion tomorrow morning. But it will take a month to work, a full moon cycle. ‘Tis the way of fertility. Not easy to suppress in the young.”
