CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Tripp

Yanking out my in-ear monitors, I tear off the stage.

“What in the hell happened with our sound? I couldn’t hear shit!”

“I could hear fine,” Aiden replies backstage.

“I don’t see how.” I storm past Apple without acknowledging her presence. Following behind me, Aiden grabs my shoulder, but I jerk free from him.

“Man, stop,” he says as I march into the dressing room and pace. He follows me inside, but I ignore him and grab a water out of the cooler. “We sounded good. I think you’re paranoid,” he adds.

“Are you in my head? You don’t know what I can and can’t hear!”

He holds his hands up. “You’re right. I don’t know. What I do know is you’ve been angry ever since we got here today.” Sitting on a loveseat, I wipe the sweat from my forehead. “You can talk to me.”

“I’ve barely been able to look at you for two years. Talking is the last thing I want to do.”

“That’s low, man. What happened to Nate wasn’t my fault. It wasn’t Faith’s, yours or Pete’s, either. It was entirely on Nathan, and that’s what you don’t want to accept. It’s easier to piss on everyone else than to admit your brother was a flawed man.”

“He was keeping it together until he found out about you and Faith.”

Aiden shakes his head. “Your brother was hanging on by a thread long before he knew about us. He was also fucking someone new after every show, not giving a shit about how it affected Faith.”

He tosses back his hair before he puts it in a ponytail. “I was the one there for her. You sure weren’t because God forbid you saw your brother as anything other than a saint.”

I poke my chest as Aiden stands in front of me.

“Nathan was all I had. He raised me … saved my damn life on more than one occasion. I could never judge him.”

“He was treating everyone around him like shit, and admitting it doesn’t mean you love him any less. Now, what’s really bothering you today?”

I scrub my face. “Zain and this bullshit with Apple.”

“I don’t like the media hovering, either, or how the radio station only wanted to interview him, but at least he didn’t fuck it up. All he said was that he and Apple had grown close since he reconnected with her.”

“They’re not together, so why didn’t he tell the truth?”

“Pete told him not to.”

I jerk my head up. “Why would he do that?”

Aiden sits next to me. “Larkin told Pete to make sure Z and Apple didn’t deny it until he said so. Pete thinks the label is going to ask them to pretend they’re in a relationship.”

Scrunching my half-empty water bottle, I launch it at the wall across the room. After a few seconds of silence, Aiden smacks his leg.

“Holy shit. You like Apple.” I don’t comment. I can’t deny it any longer. “Does she know?”

“Yeah, and she’s into me, too, but it’s purely physical.”

“That’s a load of bull. For the first time in two years, you care about someone, and it’s pissing you off.
