A NEW LIFESTYLE
And so I too cried out to the Lord for help, and when Nancy and I talked together on August 23, 2014, for the first time in my life (as I shared in the last chapter), without excuses and without equivocation, I said to her, “My plan is not working.” She replied, “Just eat what I give you to eat.” Knowing that I had to make the change, I agreed to start the next day, little realizing that it would become a lifestyle.
How grateful to God I am for my amazing friend and companion of more than forty years, the ideal match for me in this world—and how grateful we both are to the Lord for His miraculous intervention, since it was nothing less than that. He moved on both of us to pray, He answered our prayers, and He helped me to do something that had seemed impossible for me until that moment in my life—or so I had thought. To repeat what I’ve said throughout this book, He will do the same for you if you cast yourself on Him and do what you’re able to do.
There was one more factor that brought me to the crisis point, even though, as I stated, in other ways there was no crisis. I know the promises God has given me for my life, and to the best of my knowledge I have barely scratched the surface of what He has called me to do. So even though I’ve seen amazing things over the years and even though I’ve packed enough into this one life to fill three or four ordinary lives, I am constantly looking forward to what is ahead. Yes, I firmly believe that the best is yet to come!
The problem though was that I was getting more and more tired as the years went on. How then was I supposed to run my race with perseverance to the end? How was I supposed to run my race so as to win? (See Hebrews 12:1–4 and 1 Corinthians 9:24–27.) How could I continue doing two hours of live radio daily, write three to five new articles a week, put out one or two new books per year plus keep up my scholarly writing, travel two to three weekends per month and go overseas at least five to six times per year, teach weekly at our ministry school and serve as a professor at other seminaries, produce new TV shows, respond to endless e-mail requests, be a mentor to others, spend quality time with my family, have intimate time with the Lord—how in the world could I keep up a schedule like this? I was getting older, not younger, and something had to give.
Of course, I recognized that at some point in time I would have to cut back on certain activities, but I didn’t feel the time for that had come. Plus, when you’re more tired, you’re less excited about the things you’re doing. So in 2014,
