Ben didn’t ask and didn’t really want to know how Turk had explained it to his wife. But they’d managed seven days in Atlanta instead of the four planned for Ben’s conference. Ben spent each of the first four days in the giant ballroom of the Midtown Embassy Suites with 250 other veterinarians with primarily urban practices. They watched endless slide shows and presentations on epidemiology, the evolving educational outlook, and finally, the much-anticipated lecture on the safe care of horses in city environments.
For Ben this last was an especially salient topic. Horse-drawn buggies carried excited tourists all over historic parts of Philadelphia and with a practice based not far from Society Hill he was sometimes called upon to treat them in urgent care situations.
Each evening, after the conference day was done, he and Turk headed to Lenox Square Mall. In and out of the trendy stores filled with the luxurious necessities of the Atlanta elite, they acted every bit the affluent, happily partnered gay couple. They strolled, shopping bags in one hand, the other stuffed casually into their Diesel jeans, through Ralph Lauren, Neiman’s, and Restoration Hardware.
After dropping their packages at the hotel, they’d move on to some elegant bistro in Buckhead or the City of Decatur. Some place not too crowded but on one list or another as being hip and exclusive. There, Ben would stare happily across the table at Turk and tuck into a scrumptious high protein, low-carb meal.
One night, feeling adventurous, they’d taken a taxi over to Virginia-Highlands and dined at the new haute cuisine hotspot that one of the Atlanta-based vets at the conference had recommended to Ben.
Turk could not remember a time when he’d felt more contented and at ease. Being with Ben, alone and unafraid of discovery, was a revelation to him. Ben was skeptical but happy. Turk seemed like another person entirely when he was away from home. All of his inhibitions about being “out” in public seemed to disappear in Atlanta. Ben couldn’t help but wonder if Turk had turned some internal corner. He didn’t ask. He was too happy. He decided to just go with the flow. They’d be back in Philly soon enough.
