Anna

Oh. My. God.

I couldn’t hold back as I stared at the magic in front of me. Throwing my head back, my wolf howled in triumph.

I could wield magic in my wolf form.

Running, I’d done my best to purge all the doubt from my mind and just let my wolf enjoy her run, but once I gave her full reign, she’d completely taken over. When I tried to take that control back, she refused. I’d been about to force her under when she’d asked me for one simple thing.

Trust.

So, I’d trusted her, and it had taken her all of two seconds to build the forcefield.

Fire wasn’t the result of things that had gone wrong. It was the basis of what I needed.

Slowly, I shifted and looked over at Jax. He was staring at my forcefield. “Did you let me in?” he asked hoarsely.

“I don’t think my wolf would lock you out of anything, no matter how hard she tried,” I said softly. “Are you all right?”

“Me? I should be asking you that. Anna, this is incredible. Is it still active? Or does it need the fire?”

“No, it’s still up. I can feel it. Give me your hand.”

He didn’t even hesitate, and I stretched his arm out until we could touch the colors swirling in a vortex around me. I knew he couldn’t see the colors, but if I was right, then he’d feel the barrier. I didn’t think it would hurt him. I couldn’t imagine my wolf doing any magic that would hurt him.

He inhaled sharply. “It’s warm. Like a fire had just been burning through the air. You did this.”

“My wolf did it.” Stepping back, I stared at the vortex. It was bigger than anything I’d tried before. Big enough for Jax and I to move around freely, but it was taking energy. I didn’t know how much longer I could power it.

She could power it.

“We were running, and I felt this absolute freedom. I let her take over, completely, and that’s when she went off the path. She wanted to show me that we could do it. The Crone said I should meditate with my wolf. She suspected my wolf had spent more time with my magic than I, that she knew more about it. I don’t think she expected that my wolf could power the damn spell.”

His eyes were dark as he stared at me. “That’s not all that your wolf is doing,” he growled. “Is this vortex meant to protect us or trap us?”

Confused, I stared at him.

“What do you mean? Not trap.” Knowing exactly what he was feeling, I smiled coyly. “After all, if you’re uncomfortable, you can leave whenever you want. As for anything getting in, I don’t know. I don’t exactly have a way of testing it.”

“Can they see us?” His gaze was growing as hungry as my own. Like him, I wasn’t all that certain this was a forcefield. It was starting to feel like a hot spot.

One created just for the two of us.
