Leo comes out of his classroom frowning.

‘Tom punched me in the head five times today,’ he says. ‘And now I have a headache. He tried to kick me here, too.’ He points to his stomach.

My own stomach clenches in response. ‘What happened?’ I ask, trying to sound calm.

They were playing football. The ball went over a fence, from the oval to the playground. Tom collected it and Leo offered to kick it back for him, saying, ‘I can kick further than you.’ Then Tom attacked him with multiple punches to the head and an attempted kick.

‘Did you tell a teacher?’

‘Yes.’

‘What did she say?’

‘It was the yard-duty teacher. She did nothing.’

Leo starts to cry.

‘That’s IT!’ I shout. I know that I’m not just angry because a kid beat up my son. I know this is complicated, highly nuanced fury. It mixes all the week’s tension, all my added worry for Leo, all my hatred for this family who never seem to stop making our lives harder.
