After taking a few minutes to gather myself when my wife left me to go to work, I tended to the business of the day myself. It felt like a long journey until the end of the day when I met Alexis at the movie theater in West Milford. She waited for me in the lobby, having already purchased our tickets. During the film, I couldn’t help but steal gapes of her, watching her reactions to the comedy, twists, and plots as she chewed on popcorn and Twizzlers. We shared my sparkling water, Alexis gulping far more than my share. But I didn’t mind. I embraced the moment of contentment for my wife, and savored it with her.

We returned to the hotel suite where we showered together and I was able to return her favor of pleasure. Twice. She let me tie her up to the shower knob, and spank her with my wet hand. The impact from our sodden skin made the bite sharper with lighter strikes. I didn’t want to hurt her, only to rouse her with the post-pain sensations. Alexis was always game for whatever I asked. She trusted me more than I deserved. In bed that night, I wrapped her underneath me, covering her as she slept in a fetal position. Gone were the woes of not wanting to be here. The gratitude of being anywhere she was engulfed me as I rubbed her shoulder until I fell into slumber.

The ringing of my phone tore me from my sleep. My head lifted off the pillow, holding suspended in the air. It rang again before I fully roused, recognizing it. Deep slumber was a fleeting occurrence for me. If I wasn’t wrapped around her, it was an impossible feat. Being ripped from it was startling. As a pastor, one should be used to these middle of the night calls; however, I’d routed calls to my ministerial staff. I’d had my days of accepting those emergency calls when I was on the clergy roster. Those days were over for me, only extreme emergencies passed through my filter.

Alexis shifted, partially lying on top of me at some point in the night. I reached over toward the nightstand for my phone, not considering checking the identity of the caller; I was that disoriented.

“Hello,” I groveled.

“Ezra!” she cried into the phone.

Alexis’ head shot up from the pillow, her heavy eyes fought to open.

“Precious?” My chest began to pound. “Are you okay?”

“Your father told me to call you. Mary’s at Mount Sinai. It’s not looking good, Ezra. They’re saying she’s not going to make it.”

My face folded. “Make it? What do you mean ‘make’ it?”

At that, Alexis jumped from the bed and scrambled for the light.

“Ezra, c’mon. You act first and ask questions later.” Alexis spoke while frantically going through drawers. “Tell them you’re on your way! C’mon!”

The brisk in her tone further alarmed me. Without more words, I disconnected the call and grabbed the underwear and socks Alexis handed me. Soon
