Fernando looked in the mirror of his hotel room and cleared his throat. He glanced at his French phrase book, then back at his reflection. “BAWN-joooor!” he said, pursing his lips. He took a breath and tried again. “BUN-jurrr!”

Fernando shook his head and frowned. “That can’t be right,” he said out loud. He had been in Paris for two days and hadn’t spoken to anyone but his friends. While they had breakfast in the lobby, Fernando stayed in his room and worried.

He walked over to the window and peeked out at the shoppers strolling below. One looked up and waved. “Salut!” she called out.

Fernando ducked back inside the hotel room as fast as he could. “Did she just call me Saloo?” he gasped.
