EIGHTEEN

KARA

The group had made their way past the snowy exterior of the mountain and were moving through a drier wooded environment. It was still cold but not as bad as when they were moving through the chilly peaks. Kara unzipped her jacket for some much needed air.

Bolt had retreated to the back of the line after he tried reassuring her about his traps. Kara didn’t mean to seem cold, but she truly detested violence. There was so much hate all over the world, and very little of it had been proven vital in whatever cause was being preached.

But that was where Bolt and she diverged. He had been a mercenary his entire life, and violence was a part of that. Whether he had been desensitized or partaking in it as a means to an end was a mystery to her.

Kara believed in dialogue, research, and answers. She hated that they had to hurt anyone along the way during their quest.

The sun was going down behind the trees, filtering through branches in a crisscross pattern. Kara was exhausted for some reason, so she decided they would set up camp.

She turned to the group and held up her hand.

“We are going to camp for the night,” she proclaimed. “Set up your tents, eat, get some proper rest.”

The team agreed and began unpacking their belongings. Bolt returned to her with a look of concern on his face.

“We have to get to the rendezvous point faster, Kara,” he said. “We can’t keep taking so many breaks.”

Kara had removed her backpack and had it sitting at her feet. She removed her sleeping bag and tent and placed them on the ground.

“They aren’t used to this level of hiking,” Kara said. “If we keep going, someone could get injured, pass out, whatever.”

Bolt placed his hands on his hips. Kara continued setting up her area as he spoke.

“Is something the matter, Kara?” he said, stiffness in his voice.

Kara stood and looked around. Elle and the rest of the team had left to fill their water bottles in a stream nearby. She was glad because she didn’t want them to hear their spat.

“The matter? What do you mean?” she asked him.

Bolt gave her a sarcastic glare. Kara wasn’t a fan of it at all.

“You’re put off by something. I can tell,” he said.

Kara felt irritation moving through her like a snake. Who was he to say that he knew her and her behaviors this well?

She shrugged and continued setting up her tent. But Bolt was tenacious and as stubborn as she was.

“Does it have anything to do with that person who fell into the pit earlier?” Bolt asked.

Kara felt her stomach turn. The thought of someone losing their life alone like that was sickening. But she didn’t want him to think she was weak for having such feelings.

“So what if it does?” she said.

Kara shoved a stake into the dirt. It was slightly frozen, so she had to shimmy it in deeper. She was on her hands and knees while Bolt was still standing over her.
