Chapter Seven

Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, Poppy woke up on her own, without an alarm or Charles to help her. When she woke up and felt the warm sun on her face, she checked her phone. It was already nearly noon. She took a fast shower, got changed into jeans and a plaid flannel shirt, and peeked into Charles’ room: he was laying on the bed, still conked out, covered by a thin sheet...except he was stark raving nude, and his butt was showing as he snored. Poppy felt her cheeks burning. Those weren’t the spicy buns she’d expected to see for breakfast...although, given what he’d had for “dessert” the night before, she wouldn’t’ve minded seeing or tasting his sausage and eggs for brunch. Of course the bastard snores, thought Poppy. She felt her stomach rumble and took a quick naughty peek into the room. Obviously, Charles was in no condition to cook for her, so she was on her own, in a giant house filled with enough food and luxury cooking supplies to make a French chef cry. Charles had cooked for her, now it was her turn to show off her skills. She’d wake him up when she finished cooking.

Poppy made herself a quick cup of tea and looked through the fridge as the tea steeped. There was more food in the fridge and in the cabinets than she’d ever seen in a kitchen before. She could make whatever her heart desired...well, whatever she could make in two hours. Luckily, everything was organized: grains and pastas were together, and there was a plethora of canned goods for her to choose from too. Charles had his chance to impress her and pamper her the night before, to the point that he’d practically cooked her a banquet, and the “dessert” they shared was better than anything she’d find at any bakery, that was for sure. It only seemed fair that now, she would get to do something for him, to show him that she wasn’t all about taking without giving. There was no limit to what she could make for their late lunch, and he had mentioned he needed to put on weight for the winter, so she decided to prepare foods she knew he’d like, because she was confident in her abilities to cook them and knew they tasted absolutely scrumptious.

First she started the oven, preheating it for the veggies. She put a large pot of water on the stove, picked out three boxes of pasta, in various shapes (bowtie, macaroni elbows, and wheels) and colors (regular yellow, tomato red, and spinach green), and while she waited for the water to boil, she found a large pan for the oven, greased it up with butter, and put the butter out to soften, while she picked out the best of the vegetables in the fridge: succulent ears of corn, some Brussel sprouts and broccoli for greens, and some multicolored peppers. She covered the veggies in butter, sprinkled them with salt, and by that time, the pot was boiling, so she put the pasta into the pot.
