Chapter 20 - Taken By The Wolf

LAURA

‘Run, Jen!’ The ring burned on my finger, and I didn’t have to look to know the serpent’s eyes were black.

We’d only just entered the maze when whirring rotor blades hovered directly above us. The noise and power of the helicopter made the upper branches of the hedge sway violently showering us with leaves and bits of twigs.

Two men – clad in black, masked by balaclavas – were lowered on ropes and swung toward us. Kari threw me to the ground and covered me with her body as they swooped, just missing us.

‘No, don’t go out! Stay in the maze.’ Kari grabbed Jenny and shoved her into a gap in the hedge. ‘They’ll snatch you more easily if you’re out in the open.’

Rebels! They had to be Rebels, and I knew who they were after. My heart raced like a runaway train as they attempted another swoop. Kari and I rolled aside in time, but the hedge was too thick to crawl under. I heard the man swear as he missed us yet again.

Above the noise of the engine and rotor blades were yells from the other side of the lawn, and gunfire. My hands shook, and sharp branches dug into my face, but we dared not move. The Rebels in the helicopter aimed their guns at others because no bullets strayed near us.

‘Laura, stay down.’ Alec yelled. They were shooting at him.

‘We’re under the hedge. They can’t reach us,’ I called out to him.

Then came a sound I didn’t recognise. Kari clawed away some branches so we could see – a wall of flame between our hiding place and the chateau. Kari gasped. They were using flamethrowers to prevent a rescue. My heart hammered enough to make me nauseous. ‘We can’t stay here, Kari. We’re sitting ducks!’ I shouted above the noise of the chopper.

Two pairs of black-booted feet ran towards us. Kari stood and snarled at them, and they shot her twice in the chest at point blank range. All I could do was stare in horror as the impact sent her sprawling. Blood oozed from the wounds in her chest. I knew the bullets wouldn’t kill her, but the blood loss could if she didn’t get immediate help.

Jenny screamed, and one of the masked gunmen aimed at her.

‘No! Don’t hurt her!’ I tried to crawl out from under the hedge but got caught in the branches.

An arm wrapped around me and hauled me up, tied a harness around my waist and I was whisked into the air. Jenny’s tear-stained face was below me.

I was thrust inside the helicopter, strapped down to a seat and surrounded by half-a-dozen-or-so steely-eyed commando types.

‘Target achieved. Let’s go,’ one of them said. He gave the thumbs-up sign to the pilot then strapped himself into the seat beside me. We moved at high speed, the chateau receding further into the distance.

I shook, and my throat dried as the shock hit me. The thunder of the rotors was nothing compared to the roaring in my head as my mind envisioned every imaginable fear.
