Chapter Nine

“You didn’t seem very soothed,” she said lethargically. She lay naked across him, her head resting on his chest as the afterglow of wondrous sex and orgasm bound her to him. He held her against him lightly with one arm. The other was flung up above his head on the pillow, in an attitude at once relaxed and smug.

“I am now,” he said. “Up to a point.”

The point being, she supposed, that his cock under her thigh felt as erect as ever and quite ready for thirds.

“You didn’t bite me that time,” she observed. Not that she’d felt the lack of it. Every caress, every movement inside her and out, overwhelmed her, provoking responses that kept her mind well away from anything that wasn’t happening to her.

“I have to leave you some strength for tomorrow night.”

She rested her chin on his chest to look at him. “For my performance? Or for sex with you?” Despite her light, teasing words, warmth was folding around her heart because he wanted tomorrow. Once, she’d only wanted him to let her live. Or had it always been more than that?

“Both,” he said, and rose on his elbow to roll her under him once more. “But that doesn’t mean I’m prepared to wait until then for the sex.”

Although she suspected round three might well hurt her well-used nether regions, it would be worth a little pain just to feel half the pleasure he’d given her last time. She threw her arms around his neck.

“You’re insatiable,” she said happily. And one thing about four hundred years of practice, he knew a lot about pleasuring a woman.

He took her earlobe between his teeth, gently tugging before he released it. “I’m a vampire. And you are beautiful.”

“Is that all there is?” she enquired. “Not that I mind being described as beautiful. Was Maureen beautiful?”

He stilled. “I thought so.”

“Did you love her?”

“Yes, I loved her.”

Then he was capable of love. She wasn’t quite sure why that should be important. He’d allowed himself to be used to save Maureen’s life. She had an inkling how much that meant.

She wanted to leave the subject alone now. She could see that Vadas did too. And yet she found herself asking casually, “I suppose she was an experienced lover.”

She cringed before the end of the last word, but Vadas’s frown seemed to hold more bafflement than anger.

“I wouldn’t know. She was my creation. I wouldn’t have made love to her even if she wanted me to.”

“Oh. Is that not—done?”

He shrugged. “Maybe. Not by me. I turned her because she was dying and needed to live and because I cared for her, not because I wanted to screw her. She was like my...child.”

A child he would never have. She wondered if he’d had children in life, if he’d had a wife, so many things.

“Have I offended your honor?” she asked.

“I have no honor.”

She cupped his face in her hands, letting her thumbs play over his lips. “Yes, you do.”

“Don’t make me something I’m not,” he warned almost angrily.
