Nic watched Grace and Harper silently, his shoulders tense as he scrutinised the two of them, waiting for something to happen. He felt a small measure of relief knowing they had finally figured out what she was. Going so long with no form of control was too dangerous for a witch. If something made Harper experience intense emotions, the results could be catastrophic.

I shouldn’t care so damn much, but I can’t help it. The satisfaction I get when I see her smile or when she fights back. When she plays with me. It is so deliciously perfect. Now knowing what she is, at least I can help her. There is only so much I can do to heal her heart, but maybe Grace can help heal her mind.

“Now,” Grace began, “I want you to imagine warmth moving from our joint hands up, up, until it spreads all over your body”

Harper nodded, her eyebrows scrunching together. For a moment, nothing happened to either of them, but then a soft sheen appeared around Grace. A thin mist of water surrounded her entire body, ebbing and flowing. Harper, however, was still yet to produce anything. Sitting back in his chair, Nicholas wished at that moment he could speak with her mind to mind, to tell her she could do this, but he didn’t dare say anything out of fear of breaking her concentration. He had just started scolding himself for expecting so much on their first try, but then it started. Harper glowed. Her skin emanated a soft golden light, slowly growing in brightness until he had to cover his eyes. Grace must have felt the change in the air as she slowly opened one eye, then the other, both as wide as the smile on her face.

“Well done Harper. Open your eyes,” Grace instructed gently.

After a moment Harper slowly opened her eyes, looking first at Grace with her water wall between them before noticing the light brightening the lower half of her face. Looking down, she quickly pulled back from Grace, both of them instantly losing their momentary connection. As Grace’s mist settled on her skin, Harper was staring at her hands, turning them over as if she could see where the source of the light had come from.

“What the hell was that?” Harper said softly, though the question seemed to be more to herself than either of them.

“Your affinity,” Grace started, “it’s light”

“Light?”

“Yes, light. It’s very rare though, you must have some powerful witches in your family,” Grace said with a small nod.

“Having a light affinity might also explain the lack of event when her magic activated?” Nic said, directing the question towards grace, loosing a breath as he looked Harper over as if he too could still see that light laying dormant beneath her skin.

“I would say so,” Grace said as she stood from the couch and walked back over to the large bag she had set down beside the front door. Rummaging through it until she pulled out an old book and brought it over to the couch and offered it to Harper.
