“Stay by my side,” I instructed Ever as we got out of the car in Ravenvale Grove an hour later. I’d parked the car on the edge of a cobblestone street before entering the town. I knew our world well enough to understand cars and things of that nature weren’t always welcome within communities. Since I wasn’t familiar with this place, I opted to not draw a lot of attention to ourselves.

“It looks nice. It’s big,” Damien commented as he looked around. “Your mom grew up here?”

“Yeah.” I took in the scenery. As far as places went, this one seemed serene. There wasn't a lot of bustle, but it was early in the morning.

Small buildings were nestled along the edge of the city with the sizes increasing the deeper into the city one went. Snow still glistened on the ground, but it wasn’t as deep as it was at Dementon. The cobblestone streets were clear, making our walk easier.

“Do you know where the family crypt is?” Eric asked as he looked around.

“I’m assuming it’s at the cemetery. I only saw one on the map,” I said as we walked. I glanced at Ever to see her green eyes darting around as she took everything in. I knew she was probably nervous about an attack. I reached out and took her hand.

Her focus snapped to me.

“No worries, love. You’re safe.” I said into her mind.

“Anything can happen.”

“It can, but I promise it won’t. At least not right now.”

“Why don’t we just meld?” she asked.

“We can if it’ll make you feel better.””

She nodded, and I pulled out of her mind.

“Let’s meld. We can skip through the shadows faster, and it’ll put Ever at ease,” I said. “It’s good practice at such a short distance.”

“I was wondering if we were going to do that,” Damien said. “I was just about to suggest it. Can’t ever be too careful.”

He was right. We shimmered and began the leap through the shadows, my hand wrapped firmly around Ever’s. I took the lead, having memorized the map the night before.

By the time we reached the cemetery, the sun was higher in the sky. We skidded to a halt in the center of the old stone garden and looked around.

“Damn, this place probably has Specials from half a millennia ago.” Eric peered around at the massive graveyard with its old, cracked stones.

“I hate cemeteries.” Ever shivered as she clutched my hand tighter.

“You hate cemeteries?” Damien grinned over at her. “Damn. And here I thought they were your favorite place to adventure.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “Definitely not.”

“Come on.” I tugged her hand. “Let’s split up. Eric take the west side. Damien take the east. Ever and I will go north. Keep in contact. You know the drill".”

Our group split, Eric and Damien darting off in opposite directions as we moved forward.

“What do you think we’ll find?” Ever asked as we walked through the cracked stones.

“I don’t know. Hopefully some answers, but I’m not holding my breath. In my experience, where you go searching for answers you usually come back with more questions.
