Chapter 7

Marco is weak. Weaker than he’s ever been in his centuries old life. Weaker than he will allow Melaina to know.

Feeding from mortals is typically nourishment enough for vampires. But when a vampire is providing sustenance for himself and the bloodthirst of a newbie, human blood is not enough. They require replenishment feedings from the virgin blood of Bloodmaidens or Bloodmasters. A necessity for vampires to retain their strength.

Marco was spent last week and needed to feed when Lord Sebastian dropped a bombshell and banished him from the coven. Now, after providing Melaina the nutriment she needed this week, his strength has diminished. Marco sought nourishment from a human earlier in the week, but the blood wasn’t potent enough to re-energize him. Yet, he continues allowing Melaina to feed from him.

Marco brought Melaina into his dark world. Although he was reluctant, he still transformed her and he has a responsibility to take care of her. That charge entails seeing to her feedings until she is past the threshold of blood thirst, even if that responsibly is a detriment to his own existence. He is at a calamitous crossroad.

Marco has reached the point of being too weak for Melaina to continue feeding from him. He is also too weak to risk feeding from a mortal. Marco has nowhere to turn if he becomes sick. Humans carry a plethora of hidden diseases. Therefore, feeding from a human contaminated with an illness, even one so benign as influenza, could be fatal. The risk is far too great. He is going to postpone the game of Russian Roulette with his life until he is exhausted every avenue. Right now, finding a way for Melaina to feed is at the top of the priority list. He must make provisions for Melaina’s well-being in the event of his untimely demise.

Marco’s wish is for Melaina to seek solace from Luna De Sangre, but he knows that is not feasible. Melaina is not banned from the coven, but she will never be welcome due to the circumstances for which she became one of them.

After his futile feeding earlier in the week, Marco cast aside his dignity and groveled for Lord Sebastian’s forgiveness. Begging for just one more feeding from a Bloodmaiden to restore his strength; all to no avail. Lord Sebastian even denied him a visit with his sister, Keres. A sister he wants to make amends with. A sister he may never see again.

Marco has nearly exhausted all avenues and worked through every possible scenario. Each closed door and dead-end brings him back to the underground, to the Defectors. And among the Defectors, there is no one he trusts more than Amon.

The Defectors are a faction of rogue vampires. Loners, half breeds, misfits, and murderers. Coven castaways. They are on their own, survival at any cost, including dabbling in sorcery and other metaphysical properties. Humans have been known to cavort with the Defectors.

Most Defectors are cutthroat and of singular mind, looking out for themselves. But there are a few who have garnered the respect of the heathen crew, but none more so than Amon.
