When heâd finished with her dreams, Big John did what Emma knew he would: he called the troops. Everyone eighteen years and older would gather in the big game room for a very important meeting to discuss strategies. He was so busy with his own thoughts, he never noticed little invalid Emma slip away.
She hurried through the compound on bare feet, which were starting to get chilled. Some of her gradient had returned; she could open herself just a little, just enough to âseeâ ahead and keep out of sight. Sneaky. She smiled. This was fun!
The security room three doors down wasnât in an obvious place, and nothing about it said this is the heart of our operations. It was just another room, except filled with computers and all sorts of fun gadgets.
Emma had gleaned from someoneâsheâd forgotten whoâthat theyâd shackled Little John. The key would be in here somewhere, she just had to find it. Aha! Emma picked up the square-inch piece of silicone, as thin as paper and a little sticky, and slipped out of the room.
She had to go wide to avoid colliding with a little human, and then did a double take, stopping in her tracks to look at the young boy standing in the middle of the hallway. He was so sad, but he held her gaze with the confidence of someone much older. Emma crouched in front of him and met that wizened gaze, searching for what had snagged her. There was a hook in him somewhere.
No, there wasnât. Emma frowned, then smiled. His head was shiny. Not as flawlessly as Little Johnâs, but almost there. Even as she traced its contours with her thoughts, she felt him mending the cracks. âLittle little John,â she said.
He smiled at her.
Then her smile faded, and his did, too. The most powerful telepath sheâd met in a long time was trapped in the body of a six-year-old boy. And heâd made himself inert. Emma didnât know how, but she knew why. âThey wonât understand,â she warned, but he already knew this and she wouldnât try to persuade him otherwise. âFind me. Any time. Anywhere.â When she was sure heâd caught her meaning, Emma reached out and hugged him gingerly.
As soon as sheâd released him, he ran away. He might never be able to dismantle the shield heâd copied from Little John, but Emma knew heâd never again have another nightmare that wasnât his. No, the other telepaths wouldnât understand why heâd done it, not after spending years, decades learning and honing their own skills into something useful rather than scary. But she hoped they would accept him.
If they didnât, she sure as hell would. And then sheâd have one more bone to pick with the man who touted peace and understanding.
The compound was being expanded again. At this rate, Sue would soon occupy half of the city. This wing wasnât anywhere near finished; the lights in the hallways were sparse, and the rooms were more like creepy, empty caverns.
