Chapter 20

AT 10:58 P.M. Frank and his team were ready and in place in the hotel’s lobby. In just two more minutes everything that ran on electrical power would be disabled. The only thing that would continue to run and operate would be the elevators because the elevators of most high tech, high rise luxury buildings had their own power source. This alleviated residents on the top floors from ever getting trapped.

Frank keyed his communication mike. “One minute.” He knew that the team was ready.

With only 20 seconds left before the power went out, each of the crew reached into their long floor-length coats and pulled out their night vision goggles. At five seconds til, they adjusted the goggles over their eyes and reached back into the folds of their coats to grip on of the silencer-equipped Heckler & Koch Mp-5 submachine guns.

Two of the cartel’s guards were positioned near the lobby’s stairs and another two were standing on each side of the elevators. Somewhere the muffled sound of an explosion shattered the movements of the hotel’s routine. The building instantly went dark as the team moved forward. Through their goggles, Frank and his team saw the cartel’s guards reach for their guns to confront the danger that they knew was present even though they didn’t have a chance to confront their assailants or identify them.

As he moved closer, Danny fired in a short silenced burst, cutting down the two guards near the stairs. When he stood over the fallen men he fired another burst into their heads in case they had on protective vests. This was a mission where there would be absolutely no second chances so they had to be sure that every man shot stayed down and was indefinitely dead.

Having been well trained, the two guards near the elevators recognized the silenced spurting for what it was so they moved to change their positions, but in the darkness they hesitated for a split second too long. Pretty Boy and Billy each took down a guard as the burst from their weapons slammed into the opposing men’s bodies. The duo was moving away from the falling guards when they heard shots being fired. Quickly they turned back around. Danny was standing over the men Pretty Boy and Billy had just shot. He’d followed up with shots to the head just before bending over and pulling open one of the dead guards’ coat to reveal the bullet proof vest covering his chest.

“Be sure these motherfuckers are dead when you put them down,” Danny demanded angrily. “Be sure, man, so that all of us can make it the fuck out of her alive.” He stepped over the bodies and as one they all walked into the elevator together.

As the doors closed they heard the yells and screams throughout the hotel lobby and knew that even in the darkness someone had found the bullet filled bodies lying dead on the floor.
