The Surgical Coordinator

Our last visit before returning to the orthodontist to pick up Mia’s palatal appliance was with Dr. Salyer’s surgical coordinator. We were able to schedule Mia’s first surgery for December 17, 2003, eight days before Christmas, on the condition that she weighed twelve pounds by then.

My Weak Moment

Our heads were nearly bursting with information by the time we reached the orthodontist’s office to have Mia’s palatal appliance fitted and learn its use. The visit started off okay, although all three of us—Mia, Jase, and myself—were exhausted after such a long day.

When the orthodontist had explained earlier that day that the appliance was “like a fake palate,” he told us it would “help her eat better and keep things from going up her nose so easily.” He did not tell us until we picked up the appliance that it had to be washed and reinstalled after every feeding.

“After every feeding?” I asked.

“Yes, ma’am,” he answered.

“But she eats eight times a day,” I said.

“Okay, then you’ll need to remove it from her mouth, wash it, and reapply it eight times a day.”

For some reason, that brief conversation completely threw me. It was the most devastating news I had heard all day. I already had so many extra things to do for Mia in addition to the normal care of an infant. And now I had to clean a palatal appliance eight times a day, reapply Fixodent, and press it back into my baby’s mouth, keeping it in place until the Fixodent took hold? And it had to start that very day; she would leave the orthodontist’s office with it in her little mouth. I could not take even a little breather after such a hard day of doctor’s visits.

In the orthodontist’s office that afternoon, I realized there was no going back on our journey. A new rhythm of life unfolded for me in that moment, and I found myself thinking, I cannot manage one more thing, especially not something that has to be done eight times a day. The thought of it crushed me at the end of such an intense day.

How am I going to do this? I thought, knowing the cleaning responsibility would fall on me. I left the orthodontist’s office feeling totally spent, thankful to be headed home.
