Chapter Nine

I wake up at about 4 p.m. every day. That’s early for some vamps. I wasn’t sure if Anastasia would be awake yet, so I decided to start working on a spell to track the frost sprite first. That way I could honestly tell her I was working on the job she had hired me to do when I brought her the books.

I slipped on an oversized t-shirt and a robe before going downstairs to gather ingredients. I have an area on the first floor that is reserved specifically for spellwork. The small space is ringed with a variety of crystals to keep out negative energies. It’s also where I store my cauldron. Yes, I have a cauldron.

The sprite likely had all kinds of wards in place to prevent being easily located. Like she’d said to me, she was clearly not an amateur. I doubted she’d been able to reopen Anastasia’s grimoire, however, given enough time I felt like she could reopen it. I needed to make sure she did not have that kind of time.

I decided to use a modified scrying spell. It was something so simple that just maybe the sprite hadn’t thought to block against it.

I combined the ingredients into my cauldron. Then, as I spoke a few magic words, I dropped her hair into the mix.

I waved my fingers over the cauldron as if I was sprinkling something and gradually, the smoke faded and the frost sprite appeared. She was talking frantically to someone. It looked like she was angry. A book that I assumed to be the grimoire sat on a table before her.

I focused harder; I needed to hear what she was saying, and this spell wouldn’t last long.

“I will do this with or without you,” she snapped.

I heard a deep growl behind her and a voice that sounded like thunder said, “I never wanted this. If I was free from this damned spell, I could eat you in two bites you little twat.”

Holy shit! That was definitely the huge werewolf we’d encountered in the park.

“But you are not free, and you will go locate my queen and bring her to me.”

“Why would you free her, after what she’s done?” he growled.

“Because she is the rightful heir to the Ice Throne and the Winter Court needs its queen.”

Before I could learn more, like where she was located, the spell fizzled out.

“Damn,” I hissed. But I had learned something at least.

I pulled on a pair of red faux leather pants, my favorite boots with the silver spiked heels, an off-shoulder black t-shirt, and several charmed bracelets. I didn’t think it was a good idea to simply carry the books out in the open, so I put them in my black leather backpack. It is also enchanted to keep other people out, but not the way the frost sprite’s bag was. If anyone besides me touches my backpack, they will be electrocuted.
