I loved Norma! Even when I didn’t live here, the woman was hooking me up. I found an unopened package of the chocolate caramel shortbread cookies I loved. There was even fresh milk in the fridge, maybe for her coffee. Didn’t matter.

“Are you hungry?”

Fangorn glanced at the packaged food and made a face, shaking his head.

“Listen, it’s late and I’m just going to hang out in the library before going to bed. Why don’t you go outside and rest? The grounds are extensive for San Francisco. I’m sure you can find a nice spot to sleep.”

He gazed out the window and then back at me. He nodded once, said, “I sleep,” and then left.

I grabbed the cookies, poured a tall glass of milk, and went down the hall, Fergus trotting along, exploring open doorways. I was nervous about opening the library door. How much had they been able to do in a month?

Gathering my courage, I mentally prepared myself for the scorched floor, the missing shelves. At least the hall wall had been replaced. I ran my fingers over the carved wood door. It was exquisite. Good. They were taking their time and doing it right.

When I walked in, I almost dropped the milk and cookies. They were done and it was perfect. Little changes here and there, but perfect! The shelves with little brass tags identifying the subject matter were back and the damaged books replaced, but there were subtle changes as well. The marble fireplace I’d been thrown into was now an echo of the main door. Vines and blossoms had been carved into both the door and fireplace. The craftsmanship was staggering.

The furniture had been replaced, including the overhead lights. Instead of the glittering crystal chandeliers that had been here, he had oversized blown glass light fixtures, like the ones Benvair had in her home. Again, they echoed the vines and blossoms of the door and fireplace. My heart hurt, it was all so incredibly beautiful. Our new library at our home needed to look like this.

Even my window seat had been given a makeover. The cushions and pillows were now done in a variety of greens, the curtains continuing the vine and blossom theme, with delicate embroidered flowers in whites and peaches and yellows and pinks, all against a mossy background.

I put the cookies in the crook of my arm and then pulled out my phone. I wanted to record it all. I spun in slow motion, not wanting to miss a detail. When I circled back around to the conversation area, there was a man sitting in one of the chairs.

Yelping, I dropped the phone. My heart stopped; just flat-out seized. All the vamps were downstairs. I’d felt it when they’d moved en masse. I didn’t know who this guy was, but he wasn’t a vamp. Shitshitshit.

Fergus stood between my legs, barking wildly at the strange man. When I leaned over to retrieve the phone, he said, “Don’t spill the milk.” He didn’t appear angry
