There’s an old bloke lives here, Frank, thinks he’s the cat’s whiskers, reminds me of Prince Charles, walking around with his hands behind his back like he’s been cuffed. I’ve never thought much of that Prince Charles, always sticking his oar in, with his old-fashioned buildings and organic carrots. The Queen stays out of things, though she can beam her thoughts with the flash of a look. I hope she lives as long as her mother. That way the monarchy might skip a generation and it’ll be that lovely William, who has his mother’s heart, if not her fine head of hair.

The Queen never expected to be queen. Not until her uncle gave up his throne for the American woman. My mum couldn’t stand Mrs Simpson. What does he see in her, the ruddy beanpole, she’d say. But then we didn’t know war was around the corner and we’d all be ruddy beanpoles. Then we needed the Americans. We needed their food. We needed their troops. We needed their boats and planes. But they took their time. Not like those brave Canadians and Indians and the rest of the pink lands splashed all over the globe, all those loyal subjects who wanted to serve the mother country.

Only then, when the war was over, so was the Empire. Fair’s fair.
