Chapter 12

As Cecilia peeled the shells off hard-boiled eggs, she glanced out the kitchen window and watched Tonya playing chase in the backyard with her children. The sound of her sister’s laughter made her heart swell, but she controlled her tears as a sob caught in her throat.

“Hey, big sis,” Vince said, walking in and placing a bag of sodas on the table and a bag of ice in the freezer. Noticing that something had Cecilia’s total attention, he followed her glance into the backyard. “It’s a hell of a sight, isn’t it?”

“Hey, babe. Yeah, it’s breathtaking just to see her out there. I never thought we’d see the day.”

“Come on, now. You didn’t doubt her, did you?”

“I guess seeing so many depressing and horrifying things in my line of work might be turning me into a cynic. I’d hoped that I would never get used to all the bad in the world.”

He came up behind her and put a hand on each of her shoulders. “Nah, I don’t believe that. You’ve just learned not to be overly optimistic.”

“Well, I knew she was trying, beginning to fight it, but I had no idea that it was happening so quickly.” She looked at him thoughtfully as if she were running something through her mind.

“I see that look in your eye, Cecilia. Don’t start!” Vince warned her. “Can’t you just leave well enough alone and be happy with the results?”

“How did it happen so quickly?” she asked.

“Does it really matter?” he countered.

“Your friend have something to do with it?” she asked, beginning to cut the eggs in half.

“Jaimer is a good guy, Cecilia. I trust him completely with her.”

“Okay, brother. Just remember you said that.” Cecilia was tempted to mention Jaimer and Tonya’s intimate relationship. But it wasn’t her place to tell him, so she decided to keep it to herself for now.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing—nothing at all.” She turned away from him and went back to her task.

“Hey, y’all.” Cindy walked slowly into the room with Dayton close behind. Her cheeks were rosy, and her skin glowed.

“Hey, girl. How you feeling?” Cecilia asked, bending to kiss her on the cheek.

“I’m fine,” she sighed, rubbing her belly in a circular motion.

“Hey, Dayton. How you feeling?” Vince reached over to shake his hand.

“Just tired, man. Between the concerts and the ball games, I’m running myself ragged trying to make sure everything is covered.” Dayton was the head event coordinator for the Wachovia Center. He was in charge of securing dates for a multiple events—concerts and bas ketball games, as well as special events like wrestling and motor-cross.

“Well, why don’t you take a vacation?”

“Nah, I’m going to stick it out until the baby comes and then take a month off to be home.”

“That’s good. You got the meat already prepped?”

Vince asked, pointing at the tray Dayton was holding. “Yeah, my baby was doing it when I came home.”

“You just getting in?”

“About four hours ago. I took a quick nap. Good thing I don’t have to work today.
