Opportunity Knocks

Micah attempted to make the best of the time off from work and search for another job. “Always have a plan B,” she said out loud as she settled on her couch with a cup of tea, her laptop, and her cell phone. A few minutes into her searching, her phone rang. Recognizing Victori’s number, she answered right away.

“What are you doing today?” Victori asked. “I thought you might be free to have lunch since you have a few days off.”

“Right now, I’m looking for another job, just in case things get worse before they get better,” she answered pessimistically.

“Do you really think it’s going to come to that?”

“I have no idea what it’s going to come to, but I need to be prepared for anything. If you had told me last month that I’d be sitting here on suspension right now, I never would have believed it. And to be honest with you, the allegations are so unfounded I thought I’d only be out a few days, but it’s turned into two whole weeks.”

“How much longer do you think it will be?”

“I have no idea, but what I do know is I can’t afford to be without a job right now.”

“Well you have Rossi. I’m sure he will help you out if you get in a bind.”

“Girl, I can’t depend on him,” Micah huffed as she rolled her eyes. “Let me tell you what he said after I told him about this so-called investigation.” Micah spent the next few minutes sharing with her friend what had taken place on the ride to Georgia and how she had felt totally unsupported by Rossi. “After we left the police station, we didn’t talk about it anymore.”

“Rossi gets on my last nerve. I know you love him and all that, but, girl, I couldn’t put up with that mess. Here you are at risk of losing your job and that is the best thing he could say out of his mouth.”

“That wasn’t even the worst part of the trip,” Micah continued, still feeling embarrassed about what she was about to share.

“Okay . . . ?” Victori asked in a questioned pause. Micah sighed first, then spoke. “Girl, we get to the family reunion, right, and everybody’s walking around having a good-old time eating and whatnot. He takes my video camera and starts going around to his family members, laughing, talking to them, playing around and all that. Girl, this Negro goes to every single person there except me.”

“How did he leave you out?”

“I don’t know. I’m still trying to figure that out. But wait a minute, there’s more. Girl, his sister tries to introduce me to his mom and aunts and says, ‘This is Micah, Rossi’s girlfriend.’ Then Rossi gets really offended and blurts out, ‘Romni, can I have some business please? Why do you feel the need to share that? Did anybody ask you to make introductions for me?”

“Oh no he didn’t!”

“Oh yes he did. Then to add to that, his aunt says, ‘Well, who is she then?’ Rossi was completely silent.
