Chapter Five

After excusing myself to use the bathroom, I joined Winter in the kitchen to finish our dinner. Even cold, the flank steak tasted great.

“I was too nervous to eat before,” he confessed. “All I could do was think about getting you naked.”

“Well, I’m still naked,” I teased.

“Yes, you are,” he said with a wink.

We ate in silence for a minute or so before he got up and found the flyer again.

“I wish I knew something more to help your friend. I do believe that something magical is at work here.”

“Really?” I said around a bite of steak.

“For him to disappear like that, absolutely. Even if he went missing by choice, your scrying spell should have found him. That means that someone with magical abilities is hiding him.”

He snapped his fingers as if he had just thought of something and took a big gulp of wine.

“If the person hiding him is using dark magic, I should be able to sense them.”

“Really? How?”

“Actually, my shadow can do that, but only if they are close by.”

“How close?”

He shrugged. “Within one hundred miles, give or take twenty miles. But, I can’t do it naked.” He winked as he added, “One of your neighbors might see.”

“You’re going to do this now?” I asked, following him down the hall.

“No better time. My powers are not strong during the day and I assume we need to find this young man as soon as possible.”

“That’s true.”

Winter only put on his pants, and I pulled on my favorite robe before following him into the back yard.

He walked into the open area between the back of my house and the shed. I watched for a moment as he stood there with his eyes closed. Then, he tilted his face up toward the night sky and stretched his arms wide. As he did this, what looked like shadowy wings extended from his back. In an instant these wings stretched out into the night, extending off into the darkness around us. It felt as if the air around me trembled with magic. Suddenly, Winter opened his eyes. They were completely silver now, even the parts that used to be white, and they glowed more brightly than my porch light that flickered now as if it were afraid.

“Evil is near,” he said. His deep voice carried on the wind and the sound made me tremble. “I can feel a dark presence ... very close. But I cannot sense its purpose.”

He sighed, and with his exhalation the dark wings drew back in around him, becoming a seemingly normal shadow once more.

“Maybe we should meet this lecturer, Julius Cameron,” he said.

“You think he could have something to do with it?”

“I honestly don’t know, but he is our only lead. Nothing happens by accident. The flyer for his lecture was what led you to summon me, and he just so happens to be speaking about The Boogeyman. That cannot be a coincidence. Ask Bianca if she’d like to take us to the college to meet him.
