Racing down the block, Kendrick was furious. How he could be so stupid to think that he could keep that secret from her? From the moment he finally figured out who she was, he should have left her ass alone but the way he saw things was that when all that shit went down in the past, he was young. His mind was so gone that before he knew it, he was pulling up to his baby’s mother’s house. Mariah had a brownstone in east New York. He didn’t know why he was there, but he didn’t want to be home.

“What you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be playing in the sandbox with your little preschool girlfriend?” Mariah said, opening the door with her daughter on her hip.

“Daddy.” Little Madison reached out for her father. Her 3 toothed smile was the only thing that brightened his day. Taking her out of her mother’s arms, he pushed his way into the house. Mariah had a cute little set-up. Kendrick sat on the sofa and played with Madison. He could feel Mariah staring him down but he didn’t care. His mind was focused on getting back right with Britten.

After he gave Madison a bath and put her in her crib, he walked back downstairs and laid on the sofa. He would have gone home but it was too late, and for the past months that was the space he shared with Brit. Going there would just remind him of those happier times.

“Damn, she must have did really wrong to have you laid up on my sofa looking like you just lost your best friend.” Mariah sat on the floor by him and started to roll a blunt. After she was done, she handed it to him. Taking off his shoes, she started to rub his feet. When they were together, she would do this whenever he was stressed.

“Damn, Riah, why we couldn’t work out? What the fuck happened to us, huh? If we had worked out, I wouldn’t be going through this shit now.” Kendrick puffed on his blunt and started to relax.

Mariah pressed a button on her remote and the sound of Jhene Aiko filled the room. “You know it is never really too late for us. We are joined together for a lifetime.” Mariah ran her hands up his legs. She pretended to hate Kendrick but deep inside she still loved him and believed that one day they would be together again.

“I don’t know if it’s the weed or your hands but what those soft pink lips is saying is really making a lot of sense. Maybe I should stop looking for love and work on the one I already got.” Kendrick took Mariah by her hands and pulled her on top of him. He’d forgot how good her body felt against his. Mariah laid her head on his chest and just listened to his heartbeat.

POP! POP! POP! Bullets ripped through the living room. Kendrick threw Mariah on the floor and laid on top of her.
