DISAPPROVAL BE DAMNED

16th October 1680

Upon reflection, having her meet my mother so soon was most likely a bad idea. However, I knew she was the only and last obstacle that stood in my way from asking for Winifred’s hand in marriage. That and, of course, approaching her uncle with the same notion.

But I had convinced myself that all my mother cared about was that she had a big enough dowry and a family name, and to be honest, I had not yet been assured of either for personally I cared little. In truth, I had been too busy spending every waking moment thinking of her, that I had little thought left for anything else. Then again, the moments in the evening were no different, for I would dream of her being mine and cursed myself upon the morning light.

I had been desperate to see her again and it pained me that it had been three whole days since the last time, as business had taken me from town and back to our country estate of Westenbury. Something that, had we been married, I would have ensured she travelled with me. But of course to do so now, or to even offer such, would have been inappropriate to most. It would have been classed as too hasty and not proper of an English gentleman. Besides, I doubt her uncle would have agreed, no matter how lax he was concerning his niece spending time with a man and unaccompanied by an escort.

However, this wasn't to say that I had not learned an awful lot about Miss Ambrogetti. This was by her own admission when I inquired after her family during our journey back from Queens Head Valley. In truth, it was conversations like this that should have happened at the beginning of my first meeting with her. But, I had to say I was so captivated and lost in those green blue eyes of hers that we could have spoken about anything, and I would have clung to every word she said.

However, this time my question was, for once, one that prompted a reply I did not relish in hearing.

“I am without family, Sir.”

“Adam, please,” I urged her in a soft tone as I could see the sadness in her eyes.

“Adam,” she said in a warm affectionate tone before continuing on.

“I have my uncle, of course, but he is my only family left.”

“I am sorry to hear that, my Winnie,” I said, calling her this for the first time aloud, for it had been said many a time in my mind before. However, the sadness in her face vanished and therefore I knew it was worth allowing the slip of my tongue.

“Your Winnie?” she questioned, and I shrugged my shoulders for I was not going to lie and take it back. I would not do that to her. So, instead, I stopped her from taking another step and turned her round to face me. This was when I admitted the truth as
