Chapter 14

Malcolm refused to dignify any of the waggled eyebrows or innuendo from the rest of the bears with any comment, although a bit of heat melted the snow off his cheeks as Kaiser tried to wheedle out of him whether Mal had spent the night with Greer. Malcolm was in the middle of telling the alpha bear to mind his own damn business when a coyote launched at him and caught him in the chest with all four paws.

He rolled and tumbled but got up fighting, and the demon bear took over. Their only thought was Greer — inside with dangerous men, alone except for Sasha, and marked with Malcolm's scent, so the coyotes knew her value. Maybe they targeted him in order to get to her.

He didn't care that it was daylight and anyone could drive by and see a bear. The bear didn't care either. His clothes shredded as Malcolm roared and threw the coyote across the alley, into the brick wall, and transformed into the grizzly. Kaiser snarled, still human, and Owen calmly retrieved a rifle from their car.

More canines, both coyotes and wolves, poured out of the alley and the street, and a few wolves mixed in. The demon bear took over and a red haze covered Malcolm's vision. He was just a passenger in the bear's mind as they rampaged and tried to reach the door where Greer had gone. He didn't trust Sasha to safeguard her. No other bear could love her like he did, could protect her like he did. None of them.

Three of the damn canines hung off him, biting and tearing at his legs to try and knock him down, and a roar shook the air as Axel shifted and an enraged polar bear charged the wolves trying to separate Owen from the rest of the bears. Malcolm swatted at the coyotes, lumbering toward the door, and a growl froze in his throat as the door opened and Greer stepped into the sunlight.

He wanted to shout a warning as a coyote broke off and leapt at her, its teeth bared, and the bear broke loose in his head. He hurled the coyotes aside and charged for the one that attacked Greer, snarling as she cried out and attempted to kick the beast off of her. Sasha whipped around, transforming into an enormous Kodiak bear, and tried to knock the animal away from Greer.

And then she screamed. But it wasn't a normal scream. It raised all the hair on his back and nearly ruptured his ear drums as the sound howled out of her with more volume than a human throat could produce. It sent the coyote back, blood pouring from its ears, and the thing staggered and fell over a few feet from her.

Malcolm didn't stop, though, and nosed Greer as she sat up, wild-eyed, covered in snow and bloody slashes all over her arms. Silver replaced the dark eyes he loved, and the hair-raising shriek continued as she wobbled to her feet.
