“Why are wolf mates so bossy?” Rocky complained as we trudged through drifts as high as our shoulders. “We should have mated bears. They aren’t so contrary.”

“Speak for yourself,” Hunter snapped. “It’s my mate who kicked us out, not yours. And Lance isn’t even mated yet.”

“He’s lucky.” Rocky swiped at the snow with his immense paw. “Not at the beck and call of any damn female.”

“Oh, shut up, Rock,” I said with a laugh. “You have a great family, a wonderful mate. It’s Hunter who’s in the shit.”

Both Rocky and I grinned at Hunter, who, of course, snarled at us. “Iliana is a loving and wonderful mate,” he snapped. “It’s just that—”

“She’s in charge,” Rocky retorted with a laugh. “Right?”

“Is that so bad?” Hunter demanded, defensive. “I like that in her.”

I cuffed Hunter across his jaw. “It’s fine, dude. She’s gorgeous, smart, made a great baby for you. You’re lucky, man.”

“And you?” he asked. “Are you and Kiana—”

“I don’t know.” I bulled my way through a deep drift. “I’m headed that way, I think, but I don’t know how she feels.”

“Ask her, dumbass,” Rocky stated. “Start the conversation. Sound her out.”

“But we’re so busy trying to kill this demon.”

“Excuses. Quit it. Have the chat, dummy.”

We reached my cabin and my truck but were forced to first shovel it out of the deep drift it sat in. Then cleared an area of the fire road to back it into. As that hadn’t been plowed, being winter, we pointed it downhill and forced our way through the snow. The four-wheel-drive caught, permitting us to bump our way toward the main highway. Which had been plowed after the blizzard.

All-wheeled drive or four-wheeled drive vehicles drove sluggishly through the streets of Woodland’s Peak, the plowed pavement still covered in packed snow. Businesses and residents shoveled a foot of snow from sidewalks and driveways as I drove past.

“Maybe our boys hadn’t made it in,” I commented, turning toward the ranger station.

“They did,” Rocky said, pointing through the windshield. “There’s Conrad.”
