CHAPTER 25

“Hey, you,” Jack said, as I closed the door to the bakery.

“Hey!” Happy to see him, I rushed into his arms and breathed in his familiar scent of leather, coffee, and the river.

“Any progress on your bakery?” he asked, as we pulled away and walked toward my apartment.

“Yeah, Emma researched it for me and it looks doable. She’s going to help me get a business license and incorporate the business for me.”

“Wow. That’s nice of her.”

“Yeah, it’s good to have friends who are attorneys. She thinks I should do a booth at the farmers’ market. Introduce myself as a separate entity to the town and advertise my classes.”

“That’s a great idea.” Jack pulled me to a stop. “I’m so proud of you for taking the first step. You’re going to be great.” I was skeptical, and he could see it written on my face. “You’ll see, the community will support you. No one is a fan of Justin, especially with him meddling in the waterfront plans.”

I nodded. “That’s true.” It was hard to reconcile the jerk Justin was to everyone else with the vulnerable side he showed me. I sympathized with what he went through with his parents’ divorce, but I didn’t agree with his actions. “I think I’ll start on Sunday. I need to figure out what to offer and I should probably make a sign. I better get in touch with Stella. She’s good with graphic arts stuff.” We started walking again. “But enough about me, how’s the marina? All ready for the festival?”

“It’s getting there. The boats will arrive soon. I want to make sure everything is ready for the owners and there are no issues.”

“I almost forgot. What happened with the boat that went missing?”

Jack groaned. “Someone cut the lines to one of the sailboats. They found it drifting on the river. The owner was not happy—he felt like the marina should pay for any damage.”

“You’re not going to?”

“No, it’s the boat owner’s insurance that covers the damage. I worry the owners will dock their boats elsewhere if these crimes continue.”

“That’s awful. Were they able to see who did it on the cameras?”

“No. The guy wore a hat down low over his face. The camera footage is grainy, anyway.” He pulled his arm from around my shoulders and stuffed his hands into his pockets. “Mayor Good pressured Luke to increase patrols, but so far nothing has deterred this guy.”

“He’s cocky to continue with the security cameras and a police presence.”

“Yeah, he sure is.”

“How’s your dad taking everything?”

“He’s ready to throw in the towel. It seems like it’s this guy’s plan—cause problems for the marina, so my dad gives it up, or the town takes it back.”

“Did Luke ever say if this was happening to other businesses?”

“Luke said they’ve had some more vandalism at the cemetery. Someone spray painted and knocked over the headstones. Nate noticed inventory missing at The Fish House. There’s been graffiti on some town signs, so it’s not just the marina. But Luke thinks it might be kids since they already caught Trey spray painting signs.
