ROLE MODELING UNDER GOD’S GUIDANCE

Shynithia Stone was four months pregnant when her doctor gave her life-changing news: the baby she was carrying had not developed arms and legs. The doctor, who had never delivered an infant without limbs, tried to persuade Shynithia, who was only twenty-one years old and single, to abort the baby right away. She broke down in tears.

This caring mother offers her story here, and I think it is a beautiful testimony to the power of a mother’s love and God’s love, too:

I was so excited when I found out that I was expecting. I couldn’t wait to get my first ultrasound and see a picture of my baby. When I did, I couldn’t quite understand what the doctors were showing me or what they were telling me about my son. Yes, the ultrasound pictures clearly showed us that our baby was a boy. All I could hear and process was the doctors telling me that this child would not have a meaningful life, that this child would not be able to do anything for himself, that I would have to do everything for him, that basically I would eventually get tired of doing everything for him, and that most likely he would wind up being put into an institution, which would not be fair to him or to me.

In short, the doctors told me that the best thing for this child I was carrying, and the best thing for me, was to get an abortion as soon as possible. My cousin LaMonica McDonald went with me to the ultrasound appointment, and we both just cried. I had to get out of the doctor’s office and get to my mother so she could explain this to me in terms I could understand.

I showed my mother the pictures, and she told me that my baby’s arms and legs had not developed. She told me also that the hospital had called her and repeatedly told her the same things they told me about getting an abortion as the best option. They told her to try to convince me that this would be better for me in the long run. They said that I was very young and I could have other children. But they didn’t know any of the history of my family or our religious beliefs and where we came from.

You see, we are of the Apostolic Faith, Baptized in the Name of Jesus, Holy Ghost Spirited, Speaking in Tongues, God Fearing Saints that believe in the Doctrine of My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. There is nothing too hard for God. I remember all of the teachings I learned as a child in Sunday school, and I started praying to God to show me the way. Let my thoughts be His thoughts. And He did.
