“Doctor Matheson?” one of them asked.

Morgan looked from the doctor to the head neurosurgeon who was staring at the equipment for the surgery.

“Go ahead, Steve,” the doctor replied without glancing at his subordinate.

Morgan understood when the doctor grinned and pressed the button on a CD

player. Jazz music flooded the whole room. She could see other medical staff nodding to it. Morgan suddenly felt like an outsider.

“Ready?” the doctor asked, as he positioned himself in front of the patient.

He raised his head and their eyes met and held. He looked quickly away at the other medical staff surrounding the patient.

It was a very difficult surgery, but they were able to take the bullet out. A part of the man’s skull was removed to give room for the swelling, which would be replaced later. At one point they almost lost the patient and had to use a defibrillator to get his heart beating again. Through it all, while his subordinates had panicked, Ryan had remained calm. He continued on with the surgery as if nothing had happened.

By the time he declared the surgery a success, Morgan had a lot of admiration for him. The gossip about him being very good at what he did was true.

Strolling out of the theatre, he declared the surgery a success and told them to clean up.

Morgan cleaned up as fast as she could and begged the head nurse to excuse her. Her heart beat a rapid thud as she made her way to Ryan’s office. She

caught his intense gaze on her several times during the surgery. She could only hope he missed her as much as she missed him.

Exhaling softly, she briskly knocked on the door and slowly walked into the office.

He was standing by the window with his hands in his pants, staring out at the busy Chicago streets below. His countenance appeared dark and forbidding.

She hesitated at the door.

"What do you want?" he asked, without turning to look at her.

Ignoring the snub, she walked over to him and put her arms around his waist from behind. He stiffened.

"Ryan, please. I can't take this anymore. Please tell me what I've done wrong.

Please," she beseeched with all her heart.

He removed her hands from around his waist and turned around. The fury in his eyes made her take a step back.

"Um... is something wrong?"

His jaw hardened but he gave her a fake smile. " Wrong? Why do you keep asking me that? Why would anything be wrong?"

Her mouth went dry. She swallowed thickly at the icy glitter in his eyes.

"Well, it's because things have sort of changed between us. You don’t call anymore. When I do, you don’t pick up or reply to my text messages.

Whenever you see me, you totally ignore me. It doesn’t take a genius to know something is wrong."

His answer was to turn his back on her. "I don't have time for this. I've just had a very complicated surgery. I need rest."

If Morgan had been slapped, she wouldn't have been more stunned. She

viewed his tense shoulders with rising panic.
