Fricourt (Bray Road) Cemetery, 1919.

Maj R.G. Raper.

Leaving the cemetery, go left back towards the centre of Fricourt village. At the crossroads you passed before, now go left down a minor road. The German front line just south-west of Fricourt crossed this road a little further along and the area was known as Wicket Corner on British maps. The 7th Yorkshires were in the line opposite here, and their attack on the afternoon of 1 July crossed this ground.

Continue along the road; further up there is a branch to the left. Ignore this – it goes to the site of the old Fricourt railway station, now a car breaker’s yard. Continue on the right fork going westwards on the minor road for just over a kilometre – it becomes a cart track further on. There are good views over to the right, and back towards Fricourt over ground that you have already covered on this walk. This track will eventually bring you out on the minor road that runs from Becordel to Becourt. Turn right, and a few hundred yards further up on the right is Norfolk Cemetery and your vehicle.
