CHAPTER 9

I dragged Weston into the clothing store, then released his hand and rolled out my shoulders. Tension sang through my body and sparked my magic, all in preparation for what I was sure would one day boil down to a fight. Doubtful Maya would take my insults lying down, considering she’d gone so far as to curse an entire town to punish Weston for daring to leave her.

And speaking of which…

I whirled around and glared at Weston. “So, let me get this straight. I cursed a few men—who absolutely deserved it, by the way—and I’m trapped here as a punishment. Your ex curses an entire town, and nada? No punishment for her? How in Satan’s red, hairy balls is that fair?”

Weston blinked, then chuckled under his breath. “How would I know? I didn’t send you here. Nor am I the one forcing you to break the curse. I’m just the middleman.”

Fair point. It wasn’t like he was the one who’d ripped everything away from us and imprisoned us in this forsaken town. But he was technically our warden and the only one I could rage at, so…

“Totally unfair,” I grumped. “I mean, the guys I cursed freaking deserved it. But your townspeople are innocent. They’re just cannon fodder for your monumentally disastrous divorce.”

“I can’t argue that,” Weston said. “But may I suggest at least pretending to feel a little remorse for the men you cursed?”

I huffed. “Why on earth would I feel remorse for them? They got what they deserved.”

Weston shook his head. “I assume nothing I say will change your mind, so I’m not going to bother.”

“Good.” I shot him a grin. “At least we’ve finally agreed on something.”

“There you are!” Kaci’s voice rang through the store.

I glanced over in time to catch her marching toward me, her arms laden with what I assumed was my new wardrobe. Oh goddess, she’d chosen something yellow. I could see the material poking out from the middle of the pile. Alongside something with a floral print.

Did she not know me at all? Was it just to piss me off?

“Winter and I were looking all over for you! We chose your wardrobe for you.” Kaci smirked. “Where’d you go?”

“Sorry,” I muttered. “Just ran into Weston’s ex-wife. And, well, words were had.”

Kaci’s eyes widened. “Ex-wife?”

Right. I hadn’t had a chance to tell them about the curse and Maya yet.

“Later,” I said. “It’s a long story.”

“Okay…” Her gaze darted between me and Weston. “Well, let’s go. You need to try this stuff on to make sure it fits.”

“I can help with that,” Weston quickly offered, shooting me a mischievous grin. He pulled off his gloves and tucked them in his back pockets.

Taken aback, I stared at him. “You… want to shop with us?”

“Why not?” he asked, shrugging. I’ve got some time to kill, and it’s cold outside, and—‍”

“And you’re afraid your ex is waiting for you.” I chuckled, clapping Weston on the shoulder.

“Hey, I’m the alpha. I’m not afraid of anything.”

For a moment, I thought he was serious, but then I caught the twinkle in his eye.
