Chapter Seven

“What are you wearing to the company party?” Sam stuck her head inside Nakobi’s office and asked.

She pulled away from her computer and leaned back in her seat, giving her attention to her friend. “I don’t know, but come in.” Nakobi waved her over.

As always, Sam looked great. That day she donned a white, wide-legged jumper with a big bow around the collar, a gold chain belt, and heels. Her hair was cut short, the style framing her heart-shaped face, and her makeup was on point.

“I knew it. That’s why I stopped by here. Me and Nova are going to my favorite boutique during lunch. You’re free to come with,” Sam offered as she took a seat across from her at her desk.

“That’ll be great. You know I’ll need you to style me anyway. I have zero knowledge of how to dress myself for formal events and don’t want to embarrass myself.”

“You know I got you,” Sam replied, ready to tackle the task. “Oh, and I meant to ask you if August’s OK. He hasn’t come into the office for a while. That isn’t like him. He’s usually the first person here and the last person to leave.”

Nakobi gave her a fake smile. “Everything’s good. He just has his plate full right now. Things should slow down after a while,” she retorted, speaking a half-truth.

Honestly, she didn’t know what was going on with August. He hadn’t called, dropped by, nor come to the office while she was there in over a month. Granted, as CEO, he didn’t have to go into the building to get his job done. Still, it was a little upsetting not to put eyes on him every day. Their only correspondence was from her daily itinerary. He kept up with those.

“Oh, OK. Just wanted to make sure. These gossiping folks around the office think it’s trouble at the home front, and his absence is because he doesn’t want to bring the drama to his place of business.” Sam stood to leave after dropping a bomb in her lap. “I go to lunch in an hour. See you then.” She waved before heading to the exit.

“Alright, girl, see you then.”

Exactly one hour later, Nakobi secured her computer and retrieved her bag from her desk. After relieving her bladder, she freshened up, locked her office, and met Sam at her desk.

“You look cute.” Nova smiled, complimenting her dark topaz, shawl collar, belted vest, and slacks.

She was fashionably styled, and all praises went to Sam.

“Thank you, girl,” answered Nakobi’s stylist, making her laugh.

“You’re welcome!” Nova shook her head with a grin.

Nakobi fanned Sam away. “Anyway, thank you, Nova. You look gorgeous today as well,” Nakobi complimented, loving how she styled a powdered blue blazer and ankle slacks with a soft pink blouse, shoes, and bag.

“Come on, ladies. Let’s get out of here. We only have an hour, and I need all that time because the boutique is usually closed when we get off.” Sam grabbed her friends’ hands and marched them to the elevator.
